Waiting on Wednesday 03/29/23

Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that first originated at Breaking the Spine but has since linked up with “Can’t Wait Wednesday” at Wishful Endings now that the original creator is unable to host it anymore. Either way, this fun feature is a chance to showcase the upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

Mogsy’s Pick

Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison (September 19, 2023 by Berkley)

“A cynical twentysomething must confront her unconventional family’s dark secrets in this fiery, irreverent horror novel from the author of Such Sharp Teeth and Cackle.

Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly…something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

Inside is an invitation to the wedding of Vesper’s beloved cousin Rosie. It’s to be hosted at the family farm. Have they made an exception to the rule? It wouldn’t be the first time Vesper’s been given special treatment. Is the invite a sweet gesture? An olive branch? A trap? Doesn’t matter. Something inside her insists she go to the wedding. Even if it means returning to the toxic environment she escaped. Even if it means reuniting with her mother, Constance, a former horror film star and forever ice queen.

When Vesper’s homecoming exhumes a terrifying secret, she’s forced to reckon with her family’s beliefs and her own crisis of faith in this deliciously sinister novel that explores the way family ties can bind us as we struggle to find our place in the world.”

  1. Ooh that does sound eerie! The cover kind of threw me with Black Sheep but then it’s a black steer on the cover. Lol. The title itself makes sense, but I guess an evil looking black sheep wouldn’t be as effective! I still need to read this author’s books. I have one on my TBR pile! This one might be making it onto the pile sooner rather than later too!

  2. I had to laugh when I read the mother was “a former horror film star” because the title and cover remind me of a great New Zealand horror/comedy called Black Sheep, from 2006. The description from imdb: An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into bloodthirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm. How can you beat that? 🙂

    • Ahaha, I am wondering the author might have been partly inspired? But the description of that movie just sounds totally insane! Gotta love those horror comedies that don’t take themselves too seriously 😀
