Waiting on Wednesday 03/31/21

Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that first originated at Breaking the Spine but has since linked up with “Can’t Wait Wednesday” at Wishful Endings now that the original creator is unable to host it anymore. Either way, this fun feature is a chance to showcase the upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

Swashbucklers by Dan Hanks (November 9, 2021 by Angry Robot)
Might it have been the cover that attracted my attention with this one? Why, yes. Lately it has been love-it-or-hate-it when it comes to me and Angry Robot books, but I’ll take a look at almost anything with a video game angle, no matter how trivial, and this sounds really wild and promising.
“When Cisco Collins returns to his home town thirty years after saving it from being swallowed by a hell mouth opened by an ancient pirate ghost, he realises that being a childhood hero isn’t like it was in the movies.
Especially when nobody remembers the heroic bits – even the friends who once fought alongside him.
Struggling with single parenting and treated as bit of a joke, Cisco isn’t really in the Christmas spirit like everyone else. A fact that’s made worse by the tendrils of the pirate’s powers creeping back into our world and people beginning to die in bizarre ways.
With the help of a talking fox, an enchanted forest, a long-lost friend haunting his dreams, and some 80s video game consoles turned into weapons, Cisco must now convince his friends to once again help him save the day. Yet they quickly discover that being a ghostbusting hero is so much easier when you don’t have schools runs, parent evenings, and nativity plays to attend. And even in the middle of a supernatural battle, you always need to bring snacks and wipes…”
„80s video game consoles turned into weapons“? That’s a clear ‚no‘ from my side. Another book that tries to be funny and turns out bloody boring, probably.
What’s your beef with Angry Robot? I mostly like their publications!

Well, it’s as you said, a lot of their books try to be wild and funny, but a lot of times they just fall flat on their face. At least, that has been my experience, but once in a while I do come across some good Angry Robot gems! Crossing my fingers this will be one 🙂

Well this sounds different, dueling with consoles? It’s funny, I didn’t even catch the controller on the cover until after reading the description… 🙂

Yes, the controller pads are such ubiquitous symbols in pop culture, easy to miss! 😀

I saw this too and I’m also tempted! And yes, Angry Robot is inconsistent these days, but after being blown away by The Phlebotomist and Doors of Sleep, I’m on the lookout for another good one😁

Yes, they’re quite inconsistent! I had an okay experience with my last book with them, but it could have been better. I have hopes for my next attempt!

Angry Robot is one of my favourite publishers – though I’ll freely admit that some of their books I won’t touch. But I do love the sound of this one…

I used to have much better luck with Angry Robot, but after they got sold and bounced around, their books haven’t been as consistent, I find. I hope they continue becoming more solid though!

I know what you mean – though they have managed to hang onto a number of their talented authors.
