Friday Face-Off: Something Sweet
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“Coraline opened the box of chocolates. The dog looked at them longingly.”
~ a cover featuring SOMETHING SWEET
Mogsy’s Pick:
Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Forgive me for going with the obvious choice this week, but I was completely at a loss as to what other book I could feature for the theme! Also, because this was one of the first books I ever read by the author, I just thought it was appropriate, as I have become such a big fan of hers since.
There are a ton of editions and covers available for this book, so I only selected the best and most notable (and sweetest!) to feature. Let’s take a look at some of them now:
From left to right:
Black Swan (2000) – Penguin Books (2000) – Transworld Digital (2010)
Penguin Movie Tie-In (2000) – Penguin Non-Classics (2000) – Ukrainian Edition (2015) – Czech Edition (2001)
Romanian Edition (2007) – Lithuanian Edition (2004) – Lithuanian Edition (2018)
– Dutch Edition (2007) – Dutch Edition (2012) – Croatian Edition (2002) – Polish Edition (2006)
Russian Edition (2007) – Russian Edition (2009) – Swedish Edition (2012)
– Italian Edition (2005) – Italian Edition (2015) – French Edition (2000) – French Edition(2014)
Portuguese Edition (1999) – Portuguese Edition (2007) – Slovak Edition (2017)
Winner:
It was so hard for me to pick this week, with the CHOCOLATE OVERLOAD. A few did jump out at me though, with the Russian 2007 edition being one of the memorable standouts, but in truth I do have several that I love.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
Oh, they are all very interesting! And I automatically like everything chocolate 😀
I like the Russian one as well! But Romanian looks most delicious so that would be my pick haha

I was definitely considering the Romanian cover because of how yummy it looks 😀

For some reason that film tie in cover makes me want to scream! She just looks so smug and annoying! I like the Romanian cover just because of all the chocolates on it!

Oh yes, she does have the most punchable expression on her face in those movie posters/covers doesn’t she? LOL!

You and Tammy were on the same wavelength this week! I actually like both Dutch covers the best. I’ve never read this book but know lots of people love it. I actually managed to participate this week. Now can I keep it up? That is the question.

I was so glad Tammy chose this one too! I actually thought we were going to see this book around more, because it was the clear pick for me 😀

I guess this was the obvious choice, but for some reason I didn’t think anyone else would pick it! Maybe because I read it so long ago. But hey I know we have good taste😉 I still love the Lithuanian edition the best.

I honestly could think of no other book! I didn’t really want to turn to fruits for this topic either, so I stuck with candy and Chocolat was the first and only book to come to mind 😀 And yes, haha, great minds think alike!

Chocolate overload indeed!!! I guess that any cover featuring chocolates (either in a box or not) would be perfect. And yummy… 😀 . 😀

I quite like several but I think the Transworld Digital (2010) one is my favourite. I do love the one that you picked too though.

That one’s really nice! I almost picked that one too, because it was one of the covers I own (the digital and the paperback)!

I do sometimes feel like I’m drawn towards the versions that I recognize most. Although definitely not always.

Nice covers. I think my faves are the Black Swan and Penguin versions, and the Penguin Non- Classics ones. But I like the Dutch and even the Polish one too!

The non-classics did catch my eye too – so elegant!

Oh my goodness there are so many covers! I loved the movie and I do like those two characters on the front cover so I’ll pick Penguin Movie Tie-In (2000).

Yeah, there are a ton! The movie cover has stayed with me too, I remember seeing it everywhere when I was younger and people were crazy for the movie 🙂

Wow, truly choices overload! Your pick did catch my eye, as well as the Croatian one; I like how that kinda gives me old school vibes.

The Croatian cover does give old school vibes, though as someone else has pointed out earlier in the comments, I wonder what is up with her expression? She looks so scheming/creepy like she’s planning something evil!

lol it’s so true! I think old school covers though are often really weird in that way (like, there’s always that one thing that makes me scratch my head about ’em), so I’m not surprised by this. 😆

I’m a fan of that Penguin Non-Classics (2000) edition. Simple and pretty! 😀
