Mogsy’s Pick
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (January 17. 2017 by Del Rey)
I love everything about this one: the title, the cover, the description. I am always up for folklore-and-fairy-tale-type novels, and I’m especially intrigued by the Russian inspiration. January 2017 might sound very far away right now, but hard to believe we’re actually almost halfway through the year already, so it’s not going to be that long to wait.
“A young woman’s family is threatened by forces both real and fantastical in this debut novel inspired by Russian fairy tales.
In a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, a stranger with piercing blue eyes presents a new father with a gift – a precious jewel on a delicate chain, intended for his young daughter. Uncertain of its meaning, Pytor hides the gift away and Vasya grows up a wild, willful girl, to the chagrin of her family. But when mysterious forces threaten the happiness of their village, Vasya discovers that, armed only with the necklace, she may be the only one who can keep the darkness at bay.”

This book sounds so interesting. I will have to check it out!

Wow, this really does sound amazing! I love a good folktale-inspired story too, and I’m not very familiar with Russian ones so it’s nice to have a bit of a surprise.

I know next to nothing about Russian fairy tales. Probably why the sound of this one appeals to me so much 🙂

I’ve never heard of The Bear & The Nightingale until now… but I love the cover and the blurb, so I might have to add it to my wishlist on Goodreads. 😉

This new to me, and that cover! You don’t see a lot of Russian folklore in SFF so this has the potential to be really good.

Yeah, you don’t, which always makes for an interesting experience to see how the author will tackle it. Maybe Arden will do for Russian fairy tales what Naomi Novik’s Uprooted did for Polish fairy tales 🙂

Fascinating premise, and a different set of origin tales from what we are used to: it will certainly be an interesting read – and the cover is amazing!

Maybe it’s the cover design? Maybe it’s the Russians setting in the snow? But I’m getting a slight horror vibe.

Hmm, a little, now that you mention it! The description can go either way too.
