Mogsy’s Pick:
Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish: January 13, 2015 (Pocket Star)
I’ve been seeing this one featured in “Waiting on Wednesday” posts all around the blogosphere, and now it’s my turn! Anything even remotely related to archaeology or fabulous Las Vegas will have my attention. Then I had the pleasure of speaking with Kristi Charish and found out video games and RPG narratives have heavily influenced her writing. An author after my own heart! Gimme this book. Now.
“Fans of Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, and Linda Hamilton will flock to the kick-ass world of Owl, a modern-day “Indiana Jane” who reluctantly navigates the hidden supernatural world.
Ex-archaeology grad student turned international antiquities thief, Alix—better known now as Owl—has one rule. No supernatural jobs. Ever. Until she crosses paths with Mr. Kurosawa, a red dragon who owns and runs the Japanese Circus Casino in Las Vegas. He insists Owl retrieve an artifact stolen three thousand years ago, and makes her an offer she can’t refuse: he’ll get rid of a pack of vampires that want her dead. A dragon is about the only entity on the planet that can deliver on Owl’s vampire problem – and let’s face it, dragons are known to eat the odd thief.
Owl retraces the steps of Mr. Kurosawa’s ancient thief from Japan to Bali with the help of her best friend, Nadya, and an attractive mercenary. As it turns out though, finding the scroll is the least of her worries. When she figures out one of Mr. Kurosawa’s trusted advisors is orchestrating a plan to use a weapon powerful enough to wipe out a city, things go to hell in a hand basket fast…and Owl has to pick sides.”
I finished this one a few days ago, it was fun.

Definitely a fun read – I’ve gotten rather tired of urban fantasy, but she completely won me over. So many clever ideas/elements.

I’m looking forward to this one, too, and I was lucky enough to get a review copy. I’m probably going to read it sometime this month, so I can have a review ready for the release date.

Me too, especially since I’m going to be part of a book tour for it. Definitely on my priority list for December.

I agree, I like archaeology combined with fantasy. Thieves are even better and it’s got dragons too! I need this! That’s cool that you got to talk to the author!

YES ^^ I was one of those people that featured this one a while back! A female Indiana Jones type with archaeology, and paranormal aspects sounds like just what The Doctor ordered 😀 I was lucky enough to get my hands on an arc and so far I’m only at like 5% but it’s promising! Hopefully you can read this one asap^^ Fantastic pick Mogsy and sorry for the delayed visit. I moved last month and ended up with no internet at the new place for over 2 weeks *cringe* Just starting to catch up hehe
