Waiting on Wednesday 03/11/15
“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that lets us feature upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher: September 29, 2015 (Roc)
For the longest time, all we’ve gotten out of Jim Butcher about his upcoming Cinder Spires series is simply: Steampunk. Now it has a description and a cover! I’m a fan of his Dresden Files series, but all for something new from him too.
“Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files and the Codex Alera novels, conjures up a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors…
Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.
Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.
And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake… “
I only tried one book by this author but wasn’t that hooked so I stopped, maybe I should try again.

Heh, I like that they kept the covers consistent with the previous series, it makes Butcher seem like a brand. Sky captains and ominous enemies – sounds like fun!

Yeah, it’s so obvious that they want the new series to ride on the success of the Dresden Files books – though for all I know he might have wanted to keep the same artist, he or she does do great work! XD

Great pick! I can’t wait to get my hands on this one and I love that cover. I’m just about to finish a reread of the Dresden books so I’m definitely looking forward to something new from Butcher too!
Oh why can’t it be September now?!

I’m a long time Jim Butcher fan. I also wasn’t hooked on Dresden with the first book and didn’t revisit it for a long time, but when I did they really grabbed me. I also loved his fantasy series a while back. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to this one.

I love his Dresden Files, but for some reason couldn’t get into his Codex Alera. I hope I’ll have better luck with his steampunk! 🙂

Yes, this one is on my most anticipated pile, too!

Wow, this is the third wow this week I’ve seen with this book. Gotta love cover reveals! I must get on board with Butcher, I don’t know why I’ve waited so long.

Yeah, after that io9 exclusive reveal I had a feeling I’d see this on a lot of WoWs this week too 😛

I still haven’t read anything by Jim Butcher myself, but he’s on the old tbr shelf 😉 This one sounds fun and addictive and all the more reason to get into his works! Hope you can get your hands on this one as soon as it comes out 😀

Well well well, nice pick. 😉
I’m actually very excited for this one, despite some of the overt “manly toughness” tones I’m getting from that synopsis. I really liked the first book in Butcher’s Codex Alera series and this sounds like it could be similar!

Oh I hope it’ll be sufficiently different, I didn’t really care for Codex Alera, lol! I guess we shall see 🙂

I’ve recently got into the Dresden Files, so the idea of a steampunk series with a piratical sounding lead and Butcher writing is immensely appealing. Sounds like it’ll have an interesting mix of action and politicking.

I love the sounds of that “piratical” vibe too, glad I’m not the only one who picked up on that 🙂

That sounds ace and I love the cover! Will keep my eye out for that one.
