Bookshelf Roundup 03/12/23: Stacking the Shelves & Recent Reads

Bookshelf Roundup is a feature I do every weekend which fills the role of several blog memes, like Stacking the Shelves where I talk about the new books I’ve added to my library or received for review, as well as It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? where I summarize what I’ve finished reading in the last week and what I’m planning to read soon. Mostly it also serves as a recap post, so sometimes I’ll throw in stuff like reading challenge progress reports, book lists, and other random bookish thoughts or announcements.

black line

No Bookshelf Roundup last week because I was sick. Caught some bug from my kids because their school is a festering petri dish of germs on any given day, but I’m feeling much better now! Going to be a bit of a longer post today as we make up for the last two weeks…

Received for Review

My thanks to the publishers and authors for the following review copies received, and be sure to click the links to their Goodreads pages for more details and full descriptions!

With thanks to Orbit Books I received an ARC of Infinity Gate by M.R. Carey. I’m really excited to see the author tackle sci-fi and the multiverse.

Also thank you to Tordotcom for the following finished copies: Dead Country by Max Gladstone is the newest novel set in the world of the Craft Sequence, Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo is a horror novella about a scientist who uses a neurological interface to link her mind with a wolf with disturbing results, and The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill, described as a contemporary retelling of The Crane Wife story from Japanese folklore.

From the kind folks at Minotaur Books also came the surprise arrival of The Wayward Prince by Leonard Goldberg, the seventh book in The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries series which looks very intriguing. I’ve not actually read any of the books though I think I might have some of the earlier ones on my shelves.

Also thrilled to receive ARCs of Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle and Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward, definitely two of my most anticipated releases from my favorite horror publisher Nightfire Books. I’m prepared to be scared.

Big thanks also to Angry Robot for a review copy of Moths by Jane Hennigan, a dystopian thriller about a toxin which infects only biological males, killing them in their sleep or turning them into psychotic killers. This is giving me some pandemic fiction vibes, but I’m willing to give it a shot!

A new month means new audiobooks! With thanks to Brilliance Audio, I received a listening copy of Mothered by Zoje Stage. From the wonderful team at Simon & Schuster Audio I received a bunch of exciting titles including The Only Survivors by Megan MirandaArca by G.R. MacallisterThe Curator by Owen King, and A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen. Last but not least, thank you to Hachette Audio for a review copy of A Brief History of Living Forever by Jaroslav Kalfar.

    • Before my kids started school, I hardly ever got sick. The year my oldest started kindergarten, oh man that first year was awful since I caught everything she caught. Nowadays it seems like my kids catch something every few weeks (usually mild, like just sniffles and such) but I only get sick once or twice a year. Guess my immune system has been trained well by them!

  1. Sorry to hear you got the crud, but glad you’re feeling better now! That’s always my sort of “fear” of going out and being around people, that I will lately regret my decision to socialize when I get sick! Lol.

Nice new reads! Those are all totally new to me ones! I hope you enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    • I think being around people has actually strengthened my immune system a lot, but every once in a while my kids bring home something truly nasty that can knock me out for a week! But thank you, I do feel so much better now!

  2. Sorry that you have picked up a school lurgy, they are definitely not healthy places at this time of year. The M J Carey sounds brilliant and I have Weyward on its way to my library which I’m very excited about. Happy Reading!!!

    • I don’t know that there’s any time of the year where schools ARE healthy, lol! I feel like my kids and their friends just keep catching colds from each other so some bug or another is always ravaging through their classroom 😛

  3. I just got Looking Glass Sound too, and I have a copy of Camp Damascus on the way. I just read Feed Them Silence yesterday, and I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about it, 🤔

  4. Glad to hear you’re feeling better!! Everybody was sick at work (including me) and I’m pretty certain the source of the infection was… all the sick parents lol!
I really should continue on ax Gladstone’s Craft Sequence books, I liked the first one in the series.

  5. Not heard any of these yet. Currently going through a reading pause. Did audiobook Unspeakable by Graham Masterton this morning though. I do not know how I will be speaking about that yet…

  6. That’s what schools are for, Steff. When I first started working with kids I used to get sick every other week. Now, I get sick only once a month or so—because schools are terrible. I mean, they’re probably good for something, but I can’t think of what. Glad you’re feeling better!! Hopefully it was the kind of sickness where you could still get reading done?

    • I don’t actually get sick so much anymore, but I think it’s a combination of just strengthening my immune system by exposing myself to whatever my kids catch all the time and just chugging EmergenC like there’s no tomorrow, lol. The times I do get sick though, like maybe 2-3 times a year, it’s usually really bad, the kind that lays me out for a week or more.

      • My immune system the past few years has been shit, and since I still work with kids occasionally, I get sick all the time. Can’t recommend
