Waiting on Wednesday 06/30/21

Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that first originated at Breaking the Spine but has since linked up with “Can’t Wait Wednesday” at Wishful Endings now that the original creator is unable to host it anymore. Either way, this fun feature is a chance to showcase the upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi (March 22, 2022 by Tor Books)
I’ll be honest, I didn’t love Scalzi’s Interdependency trilogy but his next project looks like it’s going to be very different and perhaps more up my alley. Still, I can’t be the only one disappointed by this cover when they did the reveal, right? Here’s this book about Kaiju, and that’s seriously the cover we’re getting. Arrgh.
“Something BIG is coming… John Scalzi’s first standalone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times bestselling, Hugo-nominated Interdependency trilogy.
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.
What Tom doesn’t tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They’re the universe’s largest and most dangerous panda and they’re in trouble.
It’s not just the Kaiju Preservation Society whose found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.”
I don’t know. Scalzi… I have to be in a certain mood and even then, his novels are hit or miss. I‘ll probably skip this.

I hear ya. I used to be a big fan and would jump on anything he writes sight unseen, but recently his stuff has been more hit or miss for me too. Kaiju are awesome though, so yeah, I’ll be checking this out, lol 😀

I understand how the cover might not meet your expectations, but that splash of blood (?) in the upper right corner promises some hair-raising adventure at least… 😉

It’s intriguing at least!

Oh wow, I am impressed with this premise – a creative alternative world premise, AND it involves COVID too.

Adds a bit of realism, though I wonder if that’s important in the context of this story? hmm!

I’ve only read a few Scalzi books so far. The first couple from the Old Man’s War series and The Dispatcher. I’d be up for trying this.

I love his Old Man’s War series! Made me a fan of his, actually. His recent stuff has kinda gone downhill though, at least in my opinion.

For some reason I haven’t read a lot of John Scalzi, but this caught my eye when I saw the cover reveal this week. Unnecessary Covid plot point aside (and I really hope that’s not a trend for the next year because I’ve already abandoned enough TV shows over pandemic exhaustion), it sounds like fun.

Totally, pandemic exhaustion is a thing and I hope books can remain an escape.

I’ll probably feature this next week since I already had my post done before the cover reveal. And I don’t mind the cover but since you brought it up, it would have been nice to see an actual Kaiju!

Yes, or even just some indication of kaiju! Seriously! 😀

He’s great, his earlier stuff is some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever read!

While I wasn’t thrilled with the Interdependency series, either – Scalzi is always worth checking out! Thank you for flagging this one – I hadn’t heard of it:)).

Definitely worth checking out, especially since “kaiju” is catnip to my ears 😀
