Friday Face-Off: Tunnel
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“At the end of every light, is a tunnel of darkness”
~ a cover featuring a TUNNEL
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Anomaly by Michael Rutger
The Anomaly follows protagonist Nolan Moore, an amateur archaeologist and the host of a web series about the strange, the paranormal, and the odd. If it’s something that can’t be explained, you can bet he’ll be there on the ground covering it. And thus explains how Nolan and his crew find themselves at the Grand Canyon, hoping to retrace the steps of a turn-of-the-century explorer who claims to have discovered the mouth of a deep cavern system hidden in the side of the rocky walls. Knowing the premise of the novel, I lucked out and was happy to find that a couple of its covers feature a long dark tunnel.
From left to right:
Grand Central Publishing HC (2018) – Grand Central Publishing PB (2019)
Zaffre (2018) – French Edition (2020)
Winner:
Several good options this week, but I love the concept of the Zaffre edition with the tunnel stretching into the distance, a point of light surrounded by dramatic shadows.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
The second picture looks like the inverse of Caspar David Friedrich‘s Chalk Cliff on Rügen https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk_Cliffs_on_Rügen , so I go with that one.
On the other hand, when I read Grsnd Canyon, I have expectations. I need to see great landscapes, in this case with holes. None delivered here.

Yeah, unfortunately, while the book does take place at the Grand Canyon, most of the story unfolds inside a dark cave where our characters are trapped with killer creatures, so the whole thing is rather scary and unpleasant 😛

Ugh! Not a thing for me 🤪

Ooh yes, I definitely agree with your choice! 😀 I love the contrast from the light and the dark… although, now I keep on looking at it, it has formed itself into a face with a very straight nose and I can’t unsee it!

Just read your comment and now I cannot unsee that straight nosed face! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 WHAT DID YOU DOOO?!? 🤣🤣

I like the Zaffre edition as well! Very mysterious! 😍😍
Edit: But then I read a comment describing the tunnel as a face with a straight nose and I am not so sure now!🤣🤣🤷🏻♀️

I agree, I also like the Zaffre edition. It’s more subtle, has more mystery to me. The French edition is also interesting.

Yeah, I suspected you might like those two, because I find them to be the most photographically interesting 😀

I love all of these! My favorite though is the simplest one, the Grand Central HC, I love the spooky depths of the cave!

Yeah, it’s a good one, but I wish it was just tad less dark 🙂

Yes, perfect choice! The sense of impending doom is almost tangible there… 🙂

My fave is the same one you picked. I still like the first one as that is the one I see the most but for some reason, it reminds me more of trees. Of course I am weird.

No, not weird! it’s hard to make out what that cover is, since it’s so dark. It does look a little like a forest, even if it’s the wrong color 🙂

I also like the light shining from above. The exit is so close yet so far!

These are all kind of interesting but I sort of like the blue one, not sure why. 🙂

Probably because it’s so blue and pretty, haha! The color does make it stand out from the others 😀

That is most likely why hahaha. 😀

I really like the spiral nature of the French edition this week.
