Friday Face-Off: Moody
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“~ a cover that is MOODY/ATMOSPHERIC
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Winters by Lisa Gabriele
For today’s theme, “Moody”, I immediately hit up my mystery shelf. Not surprisingly, I found plenty of nice covers for The Winters, which I really enjoyed. Described as a retelling of Daphne du Maurier’s classic, Rebecca, the novel is a like a modernized version of its 1938 inspiration, though it also does a lot of things differently in order to stand out on its own. What it doesn’t skimp on, however, is the atmosphere and suspense. And the covers, as we’ll soon see, reflect that.
From left to right:
Viking (2018) – Penguin Publishing Group (2020) – Penguin Random House Australia (2018)
Vintage (2019) – Portuguese Edition (2019) – Thorndike Press Large Print (2018)
Winner:
This week, my favorite is…*drumroll*…the Vintage edition! I know, I know, it’s just a staircase, and yet I find there’s just something so unforgiving and dour about the layout and the lighting that it manages to make this cover exude both atmosphere and elegance.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
Nr 2. Penguin pub group 2020. I like it

Ooh I like the Penguin and Penguin australia ones a lot (that frost on the Australian one is a nice touch) but the staircase one is nice too. what is it with staircases and mysteries?? 🙂

I didn’t even notice all the details on the Australian edition til you mentioned it!

I like your pick and agree, the stairs and the lighting work really well. But I think my favorite is the Australian edition with the roses against the misty glass. I love the mood that creates, and the dripping text blends perfectly with the photo.

I just noticed all the details in the Australian edition and I agree, that’s definitely one of the better covers. They even have the dripping effect on the text!

Indeed nothing says ‘suspense’ like those stairs, and the dim lights in the wall sconces… 😉

I agree, certain architecture styles can be very evocative!

I love the 2020 Penguin edition, the tall hedges with the huge house at the end of them. Maybe more ominous than moody, but it’s my favorite!

Yeah, it could really work as the cover to a horror or something!

So many awesome covers here. I think I like the 2020 Penguin one the best.. You also reminded me I never got around to reading this one. And the list grows!

It’s a great book. Very ambitious, to be retelling Rebecca, but I thought it worked.

Great choices! I like the third one best. I’m not sure why, but it jumped out to me.

I am SO enjoying this week’s theme as there has been a fabulous spread of different books and this is another storming choice, Mogsy:)). I have two I really love, – the Portuguese edition really snagged my attention, but those spiral stairs in the Thorndike Large Print edition just edges it.

I agree, everyone has a different book and there’s a wide range of art styles. And the Portuguese one definitely needs more attention! I don’t think it stands out as much because its color is so dark, but the details are really quite beautiful on closer inspection.

I do prefer the Penguin Australia Mogsy! And honestly I wouldn’t have had any idea on what to post for moody!
