#ScifiMonth Friday Face-Off: 60s Sci-Fi
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.”
~ a cover featuring that is 60s Sci-Fi
Mogsy’s Pick:
Dune by Frank Herbert
It’s the last Friday Face-Off of Sci-Fi November, which I celebrated by featuring science fiction titles for the full month. And I can think of no better way to wrap us up today than with this 1965 classic.
As you’d expect, there are a ton of available covers for this book, but I’ve taken just a selection of my favorites:
From left to right:
Ace Books (1965) – Ace Books (2005) – Ace Hardcover Deluxe (2019)
Hodder & Stoughton (2006) – Hodder Anniversary (2015) – Gollancz (2007)
Sterling (2013) – New English Library (1984) – Thorndike Press (2014)
Portuguese Edition (2010) – Spanish Edition (2003) – French Edition (2003)
Croatian Edition (2019) – Dutch Edition (2017) – Romanian Edition (2019)
Winner:
I loved the sheer variety of covers I found for this book, ranging from minimalist to the very elaborate, hyper-realism to abstract. Needless to say, I wasn’t able to choose just one. So this week, we have a four-way tie!
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
Oh I love the Dune covers even if the book didn’t wow me (heresy, I know!!). I think the Ace 2005 might be my fave- love that one- but I also dig the Croatian (never seen that one!) and the Hodder and Sterling ones. Heck, even the Portuguese one I like! 🙂

There are so many Dune covers out there. The creativity boggles my mind.
Personally, my favorite cover is the one on the SFMasterworks line of releases.

I say Croatian 😀
But how can they not manage to make an awesome one

My favorites are the Portuguese and Croatian editions, but this was tough to choose! I’m also laughing at the Ace 1965 edition claiming this is a “classic.” Wait, wasn’t it just published?🤣🤣

So many fascinating visual themes for one of the best SF novels ever!
The Gollancz edition with the big worm in the foreground is one of the most powerful ones…

You and Lynn were on the same track this week. I like the Ace edition but it’s probably because of the coloring. This is a series I don’t ever see me reading even though I know it’s well loved.

I like the Gollancz edition with the giant sandworm. I really enjoyed the book, though I’ve not read anything else in that universe.
