Friday Face-Off: Pirates
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.”
~ a cover that features PIRATES
Mogsy’s Pick:
Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton
I thought I would have a much easier time finding a book to feature this week; after all, I have a whole shelf on Goodreads labeled “Pirates”. Unfortunately many of them didn’t pan out so I decided to go with trusty Michael Crichton and his posthumously published Pirate Latitudes – not exactly his best, but it does have many editions and lots of great pirate-y covers, arrr! So let’s look at them now:
From left to right:
Harper (2009) – HarperCollins (2009) – HarperTorch (2010)
Harper Paperbacks (2016) – Recorded Books (2009) – Chinese Edition (2010)
Italian Edition (2018) – Danish Edition (2012) – German Edition (2011)
Dutch Edition A (2010) – Dutch Edition B (2012) – Spanish Edition (2010)
Indonesian Edition (2013) – Czech Edition (2011) – Russian Edition (2013)
Winner:
Many of these covers are great, but there were two that really stood out for me and I can’t choose between them so I think we have a tie today! My favorites are the German 2011 edition and the Dutch 2012 edition.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
After reading one or two reviews, I avoided this like the plague 🙂

Ooh pirates. 🙂
I like the Harper 2009 the most, I think, and I kinda like the Russian edition too.

The Harper 09 and all the other ones with red backgrounds are nice too!

They were all pretty boring, but I say Italian even if it does not say pirate

Yep, I struggled with this one a little bit – I could think of books but then they wouldn’t have any alternative covers.
I like the Czech cover – lots of choose from though.

Same, my Pirates shelf had a ton of books, but most of them only had one cover.

I didn’t know that ye have a pirate shelf on Goodreads. That be wonderful. I think I prefer the Danish cover this time round. I thought this book was fun but certainly not his best work. Sphere being me favourite.

You gave an embarrassment of riches to chose from this week!
If I had to choose or walk the plank 😀 my choice would probably fall on the Czech edition, with the German one a close second…

Yeah, the more I look at the Czech edition, the more I appreciate it 🙂
