Friday Face-Off: Greek Mythology

Mogsy’s Pick:
Morning Star by Pierce Brown
This week’s topic was a challenge. The only book I could find on my shelves that even remotely fits the theme is Morning Star, and only because one of its editions features Ares, the Greek god of war, a likely reference to the Sons of Ares, the underground resistance group that fights against the Golds and their oppressive rule. In this final novel of the Red Rising trilogy, protagonist Darrow and his allies are risking everything to break the chains and unmake the world of their cruel masters.

Winner:
I own the edition published by Del Rey, the cover of which I’ve never really liked, to be honest. It’s kind of boring, and doesn’t exactly scream “exciting finale!” if you ask me. Can’t say I love any of the other covers either, because most of them are either just as dull or way too busy. For my winner, I guess I’ll just have to go with the one I dislike the least, which is the Bulgarian Edition.

I actually really like the cover you’ve chosen to be honest and it fits perfectly. I would have never even considered this book. The book I was originally thinking of was the Fury’s but to be honest the covers just didn’t really seem to have anything ‘greek like’ portrayed on there. Just lots of different girls with long hair – so I couldn’t make it fit even though the content was perfect.

I had such a hard time coming up with a book for this week’s topic. As I was browsing my shelves though, I recalled there were Greek allusions in this book, but going through the entire trilogy, only Morning Star had an international cover that vaguely featured Greek mythology, lol.

You know, very rarely do I go with the cover I’ve seen the most because so many times, there are just better but I think in this case, I’d have to chose the Del Ray one. There’s just something about it.

Red Rising was one of only two books that came to mind, but the covers are all the same so I just didn’t do it this week. Also The Immortals would have been good, but same thing! I love the cover you chose as your favorite😊

The covers for Pierce Brown’s trilogy all share a pared-down quality that I found quite effective, so I guess I will stay with the originals… 🙂

They really are “pared-down” as you say, I actually think they are too bare bones for such an amazing series 🙂

Whoa, cool! I had no idea that the Red Rising trilogy had even a smidgen of Greek mythology in it…probably because I have yet to read the first book. Someday! 😅

I wasn’t super crazy about any of these either. The Bulgarian one’s not bad. The Del Rey one’s okay, but yeah I’d probably end up going with the Bulgarian one too- the others are not great.
