Mogsy’s Pick
The Core by Peter V. Brett (August 15, 2017 by Del Rey)
Reading the last few books of this series has become increasingly like watching “Days of Our Lives in The Hollow”, but I just can’t seem to bring myself to quit. Say what you want about these books, but damn it, they’re addictive as hell. I must know how it all ends.
“For time out of mind, bloodthirsty demons have stalked the night, culling the human race to scattered remnants dependent on half-forgotten magics to protect them. Then two heroes arose—men as close as brothers, yet divided by bitter betrayal. Arlen Bales became known as the Warded Man, tattooed head to toe with powerful magic symbols that enable him to fight demons in hand-to-hand combat—and emerge victorious. Jardir, armed with magically warded weapons, called himself the Deliverer, a figure prophesied to unite humanity and lead them to triumph in Sharak Ka—the final war against demonkind.
But in their efforts to bring the war to the demons, Arlen and Jardir have set something in motion that may prove the end of everything they hold dear—a Swarm. Now the war is at hand and humanity cannot hope to win it unless Arlen and Jardir, with the help of Arlen’s wife, Renna, can bend a captured demon prince to their will and force the devious creature to lead them to the Core, where the Mother of Demons breeds an inexhaustible army.
Trusting their closest confidantes, Leesha, Inevera, Ragen and Elissa, to rally the fractious people of the Free Cities and lead them against the Swarm, Arlen, Renna, and Jardir set out on a desperate quest into the darkest depths of evil—from which none of them expects to return alive.”
Not familiar with this one but I like the sound of it so will be adding it to my list to check out in the future! Thanks for sharing! My WoW

Good lord, this series is still going? I liked about 2/3 of the first book before I got pissed.

I didn’t get pissed until the second book 😛 The first one I actually quite enjoyed.

Definitely excited to see how it all ends. Brett has been killing us with cliffhangers, so knowing there’s an end in sight has me anxious to get reading.

Not a series I’m reading, but I do love it when an author can keep you coming back for more;-)

Ha! I like that you can’t quit this series despite the drama – I like an addictive series as much as the next girl so I’m tempted to check out this series now 😉

There is SO much drama in this series. As much as I might whine and moan about it though, I just can’t seem to look away 😛

Your comparison with a soap opera is hilariously (and delightfully) accurate: that was one of the reasons I could not finish book 3 and stopped reading, but I will follow your reviews to know how the story develops, since some residual curiosity still lingers…. 🙂

Yeah, it all started around book three, but it gets REALLY bad in book four 🙂 But he’s really built up the anticipation now, and I have to know how it all ends 😀

I’ll probably read this one, but it may be a hate read. Will have to wait and see. I had serious issues with the last two books, but was not as bothered by the more recent one. And have to confess, it is totally the soap opera aspect of it that has me coming back despite my issues.

LOL I didn’t realize how polarizing this series was until all these comments. I won’t be hate reading, but it’s definitely going to be a guilty pleasure thing 🙂

You know – I absolutely loved the first book the Painted/Warded Man. The second book, well, secretly I always felt kind of disappointed by the change of POV and then I just lost touch after that. I would like to jump back on board though but the thought of two books – all them there pages! Woah, I need to find a black hole. I can do this! *goes to look for black hole* send out a search party if there’s no further contact after a week!

Oh, I know what you mean. Book 2 annoyed the HELL out of me. The change in POV was bad enough, but it just had to the worst character of the series too. To be fair, it does get a bit better, mainly because the later books shift their attention back to other POVs 🙂
