Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson: January 26, 2016 (Tor)
This book has actually been on my anticipated list for a long time, but as a general rule I try not to feature sequels in my Waiting on Wednesdays if I haven’t caught up with the series yet (otherwise, my TBR would be even longer!) So I’ve been meaning to feature this one for a while. With Shadows of Self read and reviewed earlier this fall, it’s so great to finally shout it to the world just how much I’m looking forward to another Wax and Wayne Mistborn adventure!
“With The Alloy of Law and Shadows of Self, Brandon Sanderson surprised readers with a New York Times bestselling spinoff of his Mistborn books, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America.
Now, with The Bands of Mourning, Sanderson continues the story. I have to admit, I’ve fallen far off the Mistborn bandwagon. Loved the first book, and thought the next two were OK, but the whole things started to get repetitive. As much as I look forward to Sanderson’s work, but I don’t see this as a series I’ll ever want to catch up with.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t like how the original Mistborn ended either. It made me quite reluctant to try this new sub-series, but as it turned out, I loved it. With new characters and an entirely new setting and atmosphere, I probably liked Alloy of Law more than the entire first trilogy put together 🙂 Give it a shot if you can, you might find it to be a completely different experience.

I know what you mean about not featuring a book until you’re caught up with the series. It just feels…wrong somehow:-) Glad you got to feature it! I am one of the few who hasn’t started this, but I know I should at some point.

It’s also a good way for me to keep track what I still have to read – plus, it helps narrow down the WoW candidates 🙂

I still have to start the Wax Waxyne trilogy, and still have read Hero of Ages, but this is already on my TBR 🙂

Yep, definitely finish up the original trilogy before tackling this! You don’t have to, but it’ll really make the experience richer, and plus you’re so close to the end already 🙂

I haven’t read Shadows of Self yet, but I already can’t wait for the sequel. I adore this series, it’s one of the rare fantasy epics that brings industrial revolution to the world.

Yes! I wish I’d remembered to include that point about the industrial revolution in my review, because I do think Sanderson incorporates it very well.

I’ve actually *just* finished The Alloy of Law and since all of my Mistborn books are paperback, my OCD tendencies warrant that I wait until Shadows of Self comes out in paperback. In any case, I’m super pumped about both of those! Sanderson can do no wrong in my eyes 😀

YAY! I know what you mean though, when I need the next book to “match” my paperback collection, sometimes I just grab the HC from the library to read first before buying the TPB when it comes out 😀

I finally own the original Mistborn trilogy (they are the white covers, so pretty on my shelf) and haven’t started it yet. I was recently on vacation and someone I just met was imploring me to read them. So, I probably should make those next on my tbr. 😀

The white covers as in the UK versions? Because yes, those ARE gorgeous…I love how all his book covers have the same art style over there, they must beautiful all together on the shelf.

Yes, I wanted to buy those because they are also larger then trade paperbacks available here. Those tiny thick books drive me nuts, lol
