Tiara’s August Wrap-Up
I had various things going on this month which is why I slowed down with book reviews. I’m hoping to get my groove back in September. The kids started back to school. My husband had to do some traveling for work this month which meant I had to pull some double duty parenting at home. We’re dealing with a family tragedy right now, too, with one of my husband’s family members. However, we’re doing find, dealing with it one day at a time. And, of course, there’s always work and things that need to be done for our projects. I did get some reading done this month. Some of it wasn’t speculative fiction, which means I didn’t review it here. I read many wrestling memoirs because I’m a fan. Sometimes, it feels like wrestling should be considered speculative entertain. Also, I participated in my first read-a-long, and that was a lovely experience. I look forward to it in the future! 😀 Anyhow, here’s how my month of August wrapped up.
Book Count
Audiobook Count
Official count has now hit 43. I’m coming for you 50. I plan to double down next month. I’ve had Warbreaker audiobook on hold for about two months. I lke the story I’ve just been lazy.
Popsugar 2015 Challenge Count
Did not read any of my picks for the challenge this month, but I will remedy that in September.
Goodreads Challenge Update
Just in case that’s a little small to read. I’ve read 133 out of 150 books for my Goodreads challenge.
Miscellany
Here’s a general update of what I’ve been getting into aside from reading because, sometimes, even I need a break from reading. Sometimes, I want to enjoy more visual media, and I can’t live without music. Music is my heart and soul.
TV/Movies
Music
Gaming
I’ve been playing a Scandanavian folklore game called Year Walk, which follows a premise of people locking themselves away from people and refraining from eating for 24 hours during an important holiday. At midnight, they take their Year Walk which is supposed to give them insight on things upcoming in the year such as marriages and deaths. It’s a very atmospheric horror-ish games I haven’t encountered any jump scares, but the way they’ve entwined it with mythology is interesting, making it creepy. It’s a very simplistic, engaging game. It requires more from the player than just to point and click, such as remembering which pagan symbols you saw in various places and recording drawings as well as clues that will help you advance.
That’s it for me for the month. See you in September where I hope to have more done!

Now I am gonna ask one important question
*drum roll*
Is Killjoys good? I watched one ep and was meh. Instead I started to watch Dark matter which I really like. But I still want more sci.-fi so….

I like Killjoys, but there are some things that get on my nerves with it right now. Not so much that I’ll stop watching. Sometimes, it’s a little underwhelming given that I guess I expect a little more from a space opera. However, like I said, it’s not a terrible show. I haven’t stated Dark Matter yet. That’s my next venture.

Hmmm, I am still not sure. And yes do give Dark matter a go

I do love Killjoys, though initially, I preferred Dark Matter. I like the mystery of the characters and reconciling their apparent past with who they seem to be now. But I switched to Killjoys and started watching with my husband and now I’m invested. We’re going to marathon Dark Matter next, and hope that both get the greenlight for season two. There are rumours of a Dark Matter/Killjoys crossover that would be great.

I think I will give Killjoys another go 🙂

You definitely should! At first I didn’t know if I’d like it or not, but eventually I did decide that I enjoyed it.

Nice to see you back here, Tiara. 🙂 Glad to hear everything offline is OK for the most part.
I don’t watch much sci fi TV (or TV in general), but have you checked out Orphan Black on BBC America? It’s about a group of female clones fighting for their independence from the science corporation who created them. One of the few shows I’ll make time for when a new season begins.

Thank you. It was just a weird month with my husband out of town for a while and school getting back in session. I’m trying to get back on track now. I haven’t watched Orphan Black yet. I’ve seen you and others tweet about it (including Wendy B), and I plan to watch it soon, too.

It happens from time to time. No worries. 🙂
Let me know when you’ve had a chance to check out Orphan Black. Be prepared, though. It’s weird, hysterical, and downright crazy at times. 😉

I definitely will. I’m sure I’ll be tweeting about it when I start watching it.

I got hooked up on Mr. Robot and BBC Humans (both have excellent dialogue). Those are my two favorite tv discoveries this year, but Killjoys looks so much fun.

I just started Mr. Robot today. I think I’m already hooked after 5 minutes. I’ll definitely be adding that to my lineup. I have humans queued up to watch, too. SO MANY SHOWS! Killjoys is so much fun. I definitely say give it a try.

Thank you! We’re doing well despite the family issue. I didn’t do as bad with my reading as I thought, so that’s definitely a good thing.

My husband was out of town all last week, and it really does impact reading time! I keep thinking of reading the Hum and the Shiver

I felt like I got nothing done while he was gone and now I feel like I’m behind now that he’s back. It doesn’t end. I can’t recommend The Hum and the Shiver enough. Beautiful book. I need to read the 3rd book in the series still.
