Mogsy’s Pick:
The Death of Dulgath by Michael J. Sullivan: November 15, 2015 (Riyria Enterprises LLC)
Whether you’re a fan of Sullivan’s or not, no one can deny his achievements in self-publishing. His Riyria Revelations books were self-published until Orbit picked them up after they became so successful, and then he released two more books in the Riyria Chronicles with the publisher. This third Chronicles book was supposed to come out with them, but due to stipulations in the author’s new publishing deal with Del Rey on his new series, it was determined that The Death of Dulgath would have to go the self publishing route (the whole story is here on Michael J. Sullivan’s blog). And so we have this Kickstarter, which has already blown away its goal and is still going strong. I had backed it on the first day, though quite frankly I don’t care how this book gets to me as long as it does get to me, because I’m a big fan of Riyria and good old Hadrian and Royce. Can’t wait for this book.
“Three times they tried to kill her. Then they hired a professional. She hired Riyria.
When the last member of the oldest noble family in Avryn is targeted for assassination, Riyria is hired to foil the plot. Three years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and the cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start life as thieves-for-hire. Things have gone well enough until they receive the odd assignment to prevent a murder. Now they must venture into a forgotten corner of southern Avryn—a place whose history predates the empire. As usual, challenges abound as they try to anticipate the moves of an unknown assassin before it’s too late. But that’s not their only problem. The Countess of Dulgath has a dark secret she’s determined to keep hidden. Then there’s the little matter of Riyria’s new employer…the Nyphron Church.”

Very excited for this! I’m a kickstarter backer on this one too!

Ah yes I’ve heard about this series too.

I felt like the previous two in the series were not as strong as the previous trilogy, but we will see,,

I agree, I thought Riyria Revelations was awesome. Chronicles isn’t as good, but I love the back story they provide.

I read the first book in the Riyria Revelations and really enjoyed it, but somehow I never got around to reading the rest. I’ll have to fix that now that even more books are being published ^^

The great thing is, these Chronicles books are stand alone (at least the two that are out have been so far!) so you can really jump into these right away 🙂

Michael is, indeed, a success story that I’m sure anybody who has ever put pen to paper must envy and admire. He deserves all the credit – he’s worked hard to market himself and engage an audience – but it’s nice to see traditional publishing finally catching the bandwagon. It’s a shame he had to go the self-published route again with this one (it is an odd story), but I have no doubt he’ll do well.

Yeah, the publishing world is such an strange place – but I can see why Del Rey would put that in the contract. I’m glad he’s taking the self pub route with this though, rather than making his fans wait another year or so for a third Riyria book. He could have done that, but I think he knows he’s got a strong following and a book like this would get funded over Kickstarter no problem (and it’s proven to be so!)

I love stories about authors going both publishing routes, and I’m so glad he’s having a successful Kickstarter. I’ll have to jump on the MJS bandwagon one of these days!

You should! I think his books are fun. Before this, I also backed his other kickstarter project Hollow World which did great as well, and now I can’t wait for his new series next summer from Del Rey!

I hope you’ll get the chance to give his books a shot – MJS’s fantasy novels are very down-to-earth and fun 🙂

Excellent choice! I backed it on Kickstarter the first day too 🙂

Self published success stories seem to be happening a lot more often – I’ve not heard of this series tbh but you certainly seem to love it and it’s so good to have another of your favourite books to look forward to. So, win:win.

You must have! Or at least the original Riyria series? 😀

I’ve heard a ton of people rave about this series – yourself included – but I never realized it was originally self-published! Just goes to show that the stigma around self-published authors being less accomplished than traditionally published ones is bogus.

Yep, it was originally six novels and he self pubbed them all! I still remember seeing them with their old covers in the top fantasy section in Amazon back in the day. Orbit came along and bought them up because they were so successful, publishing them in three omnibuses.
