Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. They created the meme because they love lists. Who doesn’t love lists? They wanted to share these list with fellow book lovers and ask that we share in return to connect with our fellow book lovers. This week’s topic: Top Ten (Audio) Books On My TBR For Summer 2015

I’m trying to keep with my Audio Month theme as much as I can. I know there was already a similar theme of “Ten Books I Plan To Have In My Beach Bag This Summer or Ten Books I Think Make Great Beach Reads,” but let’s just go with it, okay! Those were only books I planned to have in my bag or thought would make good beach reads. These I think I’ll actually get around to. Work with me here. 😉 I tried to use reads I haven’t mentioned before in these TTT.

Reese is only just getting used to running the Earthrise in the black—and with an Eldritch in her crew—when a trip to a colony world gives rise to a whole new problem: Hirianthial is showing powers that even the Eldritch rarely have, and that only in legend. He badly needs training, support and advice, and the only place he can find them is… at home.

To see the world of the Eldritch is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a thing of fantasies and rumor. And to finally meet the Eldritch Queen, the author of so many of Reese’s windfalls! You’d have to twist her arm to get her to admit it, but Reese can’t wait to go. But a court out of fantasy and a breathtaking land aren’t enough compensation when they come packaged with a rabidly xenophobic species whose world is falling apart. The last thing they want any part of is some mortal interloper.

Is Reese ready for the Eldritch world? Better to ask: are they ready for her?

Book of Strange New ThingsThe Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber

It begins with Peter, a devoted man of faith, as he is called to the mission of a lifetime, one that takes him galaxies away from his wife, Bea. Peter becomes immersed in the mysteries of an astonishing new environment, overseen by an enigmatic corporation known only as USIC. His work introduces him to a seemingly friendly native population struggling with a dangerous illness and hungry for Peter’s teachings—his Bible is their “book of strange new things.” But Peter is rattled when Bea’s letters from home become increasingly desperate: typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries, and governments are crumbling. Bea’s faith, once the guiding light of their lives, begins to falter.

Suddenly, a separation measured by an otherworldly distance, and defined both by one newly discovered world and another in a state of collapse, is threatened by an ever-widening gulf that is much less quantifiable. While Peter is reconciling the needs of his congregation with the desires of his strange employer, Bea is struggling for survival. Their trials lay bare a profound meditation on faith, love tested beyond endurance, and our responsibility to those closest to us.

A Darker Shade final for IreneA Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London—but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—trickier than they hoped.

NecropolisNecropolis

From author Tim Waggoner comes a novel featuring a home for all of those creatures that go bump in the night.

Centuries ago, when Earth’s Darkfolk — vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures — were threatened by humanity, they departed our planet’s dimension and journeyed to a shadowy realm, where they built the great city of Necropolis. Matthew Adrion is an Earth cop who came through a portal to Necropolis on a case, died, and was resurrected as a zombie. Unable to return home, he works as a private investigator on the very mean streets of this shadowy, dark city.

Noughts and CrossesNoughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Two young people are forced to make a stand in this thought-provoking look at racism and prejudice in an alternate society.

Sephy is a Cross — a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought — a “colourless” member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood, but that’s as far as it can go. In their world, Noughts and Crosses simply don’t mix. Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum — a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger. Can they possibly find a way to be together?

    • There’s nothing wrong with that. It too me an extremely long time to start enjoying them. Maybe you’ll try one one day and decide you like it. Maybe you won’t. Nothing wrong with that either. But I’m keeping with my Audio Month celebration and adjusting the memes to reflect that. ☺

  1. Noughts and Crosses is one of my favourite books! I really enjoyed it. I hope you like it too and the rest of the books on your list!

    • I had no idea it existed until a few weeks ago when someone mentioned it on another TTT where I focused on books with people of color. I really can’t wait to get a chance to try it.

  2. Oh wow, you have some amazing books on your list 😀 Enjoy the Serpent Sea, I loved that series! And I’m probably not the first to tell you how awesome Daughter of Smoke and Bone is… Enjoy!

    • I’m sorry I didn’t start the Raksura books sooner. The first book was so amazing. And I’m finally caving with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I resisted for so long.

    • It took me a really long time to get into audiobooks. And at first I’d only listen to narrators and light stories during trips or while exercising and cleaning. And it grew from there. Whispersync is what really got me. Immersion reading is awesome. But trust me I definitely understand where you’re coming from. We can still talk books no matter how we choose to consume them. 😉

  3. Not surprised to see Daughter of Smoke and Bone on there. 😉 Looking forward to reading your thoughts on it once you’ve listened to the audiobook!

I don’t listen to audiobooks, but right now I’m reading Juliet Marillier’s “Daughter of the Forest.” It’s pretty good! A few others I’m planning to read this summer are Karina Sumner-Smith’s “Defiant,” Tina Connolly’s “Ironskin,” and Renee Ahdieh’s “The Wrath and the Dawn.”

    • I hadn’t heard of Daughter of the Forest. I’ll have to look into that one. The title sounds intriguing. But I have heard of the others. Lots of my friends like The Wrath and the Dawn.

      • I think Mogsy read Daughter of the Forest not too long ago and reviewed it for the site…? It might have been on a past Backlist Burndown article.

Daughter of the Forest is pretty good. Slow to start, but the I love the simplicity of the language and the conflict that Sorcha has to overcome. I’m only a quarter of the way through, so we’ll see how it goes from here. 😉

        • I’ll have to do a search on our site. I try to keep up with what we’ve read and reviewed, especially if I’m thinking about reading it. But sometimes I get tied up with work and life. If she reviewed it during my hiatus last year, I definitely missed it. I’m still catching up on reviews from that time.

  4. Well, the only two I’ve read here are Daughter of Smoke & Bone and ADSOM but I HIGHLY recommend both 😀 They’re both among my favorite books of all time so I hope that you’ll have the same luck with them as I did Tiara! xx

  5. I enjoyed Daughter of Smoke and Bone but for some reason haven’t continued with the series.
I’ve just purchased the Schwab book and really looking forward to that one so wonder what you’ll make of that.

    • With so many books to read, it’s easy to stray from a series. Books easily distract me from other books. LOL.

    • Khristine Hvam is an excellent narrator, so I’m definitely looking forward to her narration of this book.

  6. I hope you’ll like Daughter of Smoke and Bone and A Darker Shade of Magic, I adored both. I wonder what they sound like in audio, that would be a great way to re-read them…
