Waiting on Wednesday 12/10/14

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that lets us feature upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!
Mogsy’s Pick:
Half the World by Joe Abercrombie: February 17, 2015 (Del Rey)
Seriously, it feels like just yesterday I was just finishing up Half A King and already the release of the sequel is on the horizon, just a few months away. I love it when series have shorter interval times between books, not to mention 2014 seems to have just blown right by.
Half the World appears to pick up sometime after the first book, where Yarvi is now minister and the story focuses instead on a young female warrior.
“New York Times bestselling author Joe Abercrombie’s thrilling new series continues in the follow-up to Half a King, which George R. R. Martin hailed as “a fast-paced tale of betrayal and revenge that grabbed me from page 1 and refused to let go.”
Sometimes a girl is touched by Mother War.
Thorn is such a girl. Desperate to avenge her dead father, she lives to fight. But she has been named a murderer by the very man who trained her to kill.
Sometimes a woman becomes a warrior.
She finds herself caught up in the schemes of Father Yarvi, Gettland’s deeply cunning minister. Crossing half the world to find allies against the ruthless High King, she learns harsh lessons of blood and deceit.
Sometimes a warrior becomes a weapon.
Beside her on the journey is Brand, a young warrior who hates to kill, a failure in his eyes and hers, but with one chance at redemption.
And weapons are made for one purpose.
Will Thorn forever be a pawn in the hands of the powerful, or can she carve her own path?”
I am very excited about this one. I thought the first could have used a few more girls in it – guess the second won’t suffer from that problem 🙂

I havent even read Half a King yet. Mind you, saying that, I havent actually read any Abercrombie, I have Red Country but was told even though it is a stand alone there is lots of things mentioned or referenced that happened in previous books etc. Thorn is a cool name too.

Oh Romeo, just go read The Blade Itself. Like, today would be a good time to start.

I shall add it to my wishlist like now! 🙂

Yes, I love Red Country – I still think you can read it on its own and be just fine, but you WILL definitely get the most oomph out of it if you read the First Law trilogy first.

I have been instructed by Nathan to read The Blade Itself asap! 🙂

I still haven’t been able to bring myself to read the first book. Actually, I’ve yet to read the man at all (the horror, I know!) and I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with all the baggage and expectations that the YA tag bring for me.

I’m actually a bit shocked here 🙂 But you have good things to look forward to 🙂

Yes the horror! If you are concerned about the YA tag, I would definitely tackle his adult work first. You can’t go wrong!

Looking forward to this next installment! I enjoyed the first book very much, and I also like that Abercrombie will not make us wait for *years* to read the rest of the story – unlike a certain GRRM…. 😀

I know! Gotta love these series where the books are already all written or at least close to being finished, and the release dates come on real fast.

I have not yet read Half a King, but I do have a copy. One of these days!

I didn’t read the blurb b/c possible spoilers, but I’ve decided that I’m going to try to read an Abercrombie book before 2014 is over – Half a King seems like the best bet!

Seems like this second book will focus on a whole different character (though set in the same world with the same familiar people) so I wouldn’t worry too much about spoilers 🙂

I have to laugh because my ARC copy of this just showed up in the mail. 🙂 The waiting is over.

Half a king sounds good. I haven’t read Abercrombie before so I was going to start with his first series instead. Also I love short release times!
