Mogsy’s Bookshelf Roundup: Book Haul, Backlist, What I’ve Read

Now that I’m caring for a newborn 24/7, I’ve learned pretty quickly to do everything with only one hand…everything except holding a heavy hardcover while trying to flip pages at the same time! I’ve relied a little more on eARCs in recent weeks as a result.

Received for Review:

The Skull Throne The Novice

62fcc-themimeorder The Revolution Trade Hexed Sisters of Witchdown

The Skull Throne by Peter V. Brett – From NetGalley. I was really glad to get a copy of this and started reading it almost right away, which isn’t something I usually do when a book’s release date is still a ways off. But then I desperately wanted to find out what happened after the end of the previous book and got hooked in as a result…

The Novice by Taran Matharu – From NetGalley. A Young Adult title that caught my eye and shows great promise. I sure hope it turns out better than the last time I took a chance on a YA novel that caught my interest on NG.

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon – Audiobook, with thanks to Audible Studios. Ever since I read The Bone Season I’ve been curious about the sequel.

The Revolution Trade by Charles Stross – Review copy, with thanks to Tor. This is the third omnibus in the reprint of Charles Stross’s The Merchant Princes series, which reminds me once again I need to get on reading the other two.

Hexed: The Sisters of Witchdown by Michael Alan Nelson – Physical ARC, with thanks to Pyr. I’m so grateful to the publisher for sending me this book because it’s been on my wishlist for a while and I’m really excited to check it out!

Purchased:

Fool's Errand

Fool’s Errand by Robin Hobb – Audiobook. This was an Audible daily deal that I couldn’t resist. I haven’t finished the Farseer Trilogy yet, with still one last book to go, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have the first book of the Tawny Man series on hand.  After all, I do have plans to read all the Fitz books…some day.

Back to the Backlist:

On tap from the backlist bar this week:

California Bones

California Bones by Greg Van Eekhout – Personal library. I’m finally putting my money where my mouth is! After saying for months that I will read this book, I’m gonna be making it happen this week. For anyone curious, this book has been on my TBR since November 4, 2013 according to Goodreads, so it definitely qualifies for my backlist challenge.

What I’ve Read Since the Last Update:

I’ve been very productive! Keep an eye out for my reviews of these books in the coming weeks.

Atlanta Burns Your Servants and Your People Burned War Crimes

Maplecroft The Skull Throne The Thorn of Dentonhill Evensong

    • Nah, you’re not the only one. I thought Maplecroft was okay, but didn’t love it either. Completely different than what I thought it would be. I like Lovecraft inspired stories, but this one didn’t really do it for me.

  1. Woot! Can’t wait to hear what you think of California Bones. Also, very, very jealous that you got Novice. And Hexed. And . . . 😉

  2. I’m very curious to read your reviews of Atlanta Burns, Maplecroft, and Evensong (I just got a copy of the last one). Oh and California Bones! I hope you enjoy it. I saw Hexed on Edelweiss and may request it. Hope all is well in Baby Land:-D

    • A review for Atlanta Burns is definitely coming up…I still have to write the one for Evensong. Oh man that one will be a tough one to review, I have to sort out my emotions! (in other words, I enjoyed it 😛 )

And babyland is fabulous…just tiring 🙂

    • Hopefully I’ll get to the Merchant Princes books – so much on my TBR. California Bones stayed there for more than a year and I’m finally getting to it now.

  3. Haha, I’m with you on the one-handed reading situation. 🙂 The only hardback I’ve read since having a baby is Handmaid’s Tale which is tiny. Reading books on my Kindle is much more practical!

    • The sequel being out is the main reason I’m finally reading California Bones as well. I already saw the cover for the third book! He’s really pumping these out!

  4. Yay for new books! 😀 Looking forward to reading your upcoming reviews.

I just finished Maria V. Snyder’s Shadow Study today and was very happy with it for the most part. Haven’t decided what I’ll read next. I’m leaning toward Julie Kagawa’s The Iron King, since I want to start reading books with fairy characters to compare them to what I’m writing, but I’ve also been toying with Laini Taylor’s Daughter Of Smoke And Bone and Jay Kristoff’s Stormdancer.

I’ve also been visiting Tolkien’s The Silmarillion from time to time. A few other readers recommended I should take that one slowly, and so far I’m glad I am. No wonder they call it the “Bible” of Middle Earth.

    • It definitely is! I’ve never read the Silmarillion personally, but my husband has, and he’d probably say to take it slow as well. He’s a pretty big LOTR fan, and even he says it’s hard to get into, so kudos to you!

      • Thanks! Most of it is dry reading, sort of like a textbook. But parts of it have been really interesting so far. I’m looking forward to seeing what else happened early on in Middle Earth’s history, and when familiar names finally start cropping up. (I do know there won’t be many, but I’m fine with that.)

  5. I need to recheck Pyr’s catalog this year. If I remember right there wasn’t a lot that called out to me. Hexed was on the maybe but probably not really my thing list.

  6. I’m impressed that you’ve been able to do so much reading, even if it is only one-handed! 😉 Very intrigued to hear your thoughts on Atlanta Burns. I haven’t read anything by Chuck Wendig yet, but I think that one would be my cup of tea. Happy reading with all those ARCs! MY fingers are crossed that The Novice is good!

  7. Gorgeous fantasy haul here^^ lots of new ones for me so I’ll be looking out for your reviews on all of them! I still need to read Mime Order myself but I wasn’t blown away by Bone Season so I’m in no big rush. And seeing Burned there reminded me that I have yet to read Iced…and considering my love for the Fever series, I need to fix that asap! Happy reading xx
