To celebrate Wyrd and Wonder, I’ll be featuring fantasy/paranormal-related picks for my Waiting on Wednesday posts for the whole month of May! For our final W&W installment, this is a book whose cover was just revealed last week, and it is stunning! I’ve only read Chloe Neill’s paranormal/UF before this, so The Bright and Breaking Sea should be a bit of a change for me, but the description sounds so good and I am always up for a maritime fantasy adventure!

I’m not familiar with this author, and the book sounds interesting so I might try it. I do wonder, have there always been a number of sailing-related fantasy books out there I’ve just overlooked, or are their number increasing lately? This one, The Bone Ships, The Forever Sea. I wonder if it’s like specific cars that have always been there but I only notice them when a friend or I buy one. 🙂

I’ve read quite a bit of Chloe Neill and I have to say, this does sound like a departure from her urban fantasy. Sounds good though!

The premise sounds like fun actually! Maritime fantasy. So rare. Besides The Bone Ships, I don’t think I’ve ever read anything else that fits that category hahah

It’s definitely been around, but as a subgenre, I guess it hasn’t been as prominent…Hmmm…have you read Scott Lynch’s Red Seas Under Red Skies? That’s the big one I can think of that’s been out a while and was quite big! 😀

The Lies of Locke Lamora is actually my all-time favourite fantasy novel to this day hahah I have been stretching out my read of the sequels but plan on getting to Red Seas Under Red Skies this year!!! I just wish Scott Lynch could… continue… his… series… 😛

I think as a subgenre, seafaring fantasy has been around, but few of the books seem to get much attention or any hype! Hope that’s a trend that’s turning around though, there have been some major maritime fantasy releases the last couple years 😀

You’re right – I do recall a stormingly good fantasy pirate adventure – The Wake of the Bloody Angel by Alex Bledsoe, which definitely converted me:)).
