Friday Face-Off: Brown
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
~ a cover that is BROWN
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich
Today’s theme was challenging. Finding covers that are brown wasn’t as much the problem as finding ones that were actually interesting and not so dull and drab. But I think I found a good choice in The Dead House, a YA horror written in the epistolary style and presented as a beautiful visual collection of materials that included diary entries, interview transcripts, news articles, emails, descriptions of video footage, etc. I thought the covers available were pretty cool too:
From left to right:
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (2015) – Orion Children’s Books (2015) – French Edition (2020)
Winner:
Dawn Kurtagich’s books tend to have very different covers between the US and UK editions (and sometimes even different titles) and The Dead House is no exception. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that a new French edition had come out recently, and it’s quite nice too. But at the end of the day, my favorite is probably the Little, Brown Books for Young Readers edition. It’s eerie and atmospheric, and I love the imagery of the veinous looking tree branches behind the girl or whatever they are.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
If I saw the cover with the heart on it I would definitely pick that book up!

On second look, that really is quite a dramatic cover!

i like both your choice and the French edition: the first is very moody and somber and gives off a feeling of impending doom, while the second has those flying burning pictures that are so eye-catching…

Definitely impending doom. Perfect description!

I’m with you – I love that face staring back at me, though the burning heart was a close second. And I HATE the French cover – that slice of a different perspective plonked in the middle of the cover really threw me. Great choice for this week:)

I found the French cover unsettling – the burning photograph right in front of her face made it seem like she was telekinetically doing it, but I totally get the jarring perspective!

I didn’t know we had it in French but I don’t like the cover. I prefer the same you chose

Haha, yeah the French cover doesn’t seem very popular 😀

I like the same one as you and that French one does nothing for me. I remember this book being super weird, but in a good way, when I read it.

Yeah the book was definitely weird. I enjoyed the cool presentation of it though!

I love your choice, and this is a great pick for the theme. I was having trouble thinking of one book so I did the collage thing, but I’m surprised seeing everyone’s posts how many brown covers are out there!

Yeah there were a lot, surprisingly – but I had a hard time finding a book with more than one cover!

Never heard of this one but those covers are all intriguing. I’m kind of drawn to the one with the flaming heart just because it’s so eye-catching. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Brown is a tough one for sure. I like the first one the best, I think, the second one’s not bad but definitely the first for me.

Agreed, the UK cover isn’t bad at all, but the US cover definitely appeals to me more.

Same, and the French is just bad

LOL that what everyone seems to be saying. It’s my least favorite, but it’s not that bad 😛

I confess that brown seems like an odd choice for this theme but that’s just because I find it dull LOL. I agree with your choice Mogsy!
