Friday Face-Off: Pretty Dresses

Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.

This week’s theme is:

“The puffy dress”
~ MERINGUE

Mogsy’s Pick:

Glamourist Histories by Mary Robinette Kowal

For today’s topic, I’ve decided to feature the covers of the five books in Mary Robinette Kowal’s Glamourist Histories, her fantasy of manners series inspired by Austenesque Regency romance. These gorgeous editions are published by Tor:

Winner:

I had a hard time choosing this week. It was almost a three-way tie between Shades of Milk and Honey, Glamour in Glass and Of Noble Family, but in the end I had to go with the first book–the fiery colors made it stand out, and the striking imagery leaves no doubt there is a touch of magic going on, not to mention it appeals to the music lover in me.

But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?

  1. Empire Waist dresses have never worked for me. I almost didn’t watch the Pride and Prejudice mini-series with Firth and Ehle because it shows Ehle on the cover with an empire waist dress. I’m just glad that style isn’t current nor likely to ever come back 😀

  2. I love your choice and was torn between the first two covers -but I think your winner is the best on balance because it gives you the impression that something more is happening, something magical, whereas the other cover looks like it could be a period story with no fantastical elements (although there are the little bubbles now I look more closely) Well dang it – I’m still going for the first.

  3. Oooo… WHAT a fabulous pick to this week’s theme – and such very pretty covers… I’m completely torn, but I think I agree with your choice as those warm colours sing out. And this series looks fabulous – but I MUST get on top of my TBR pile before diving into yet more new and shiny!!

    • Right? 😀 Out of all of them, Shades of Milk and Honey really jumped out at me, because it alone had the fiery colors. I love the “softness” of the paler, cooler tones on the other covers, but in terms of being eye-catching, I think book 1 wins!

  4. Ooh I haven’t heard of this series before, I’ll have to look into it. And I agree with your choice, the colours of it really make it stand out like you’ve said. It’s beautiful!
