Friday Face-Off: War
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
~ a cover of a book about WAR
Mogsy’s Pick:
Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson
Today’s theme celebrates March as the month named for Mars, the Roman god of war. The interpretations allowed for this theme were many, from a Roman style cover or a cover featuring god or gods to simply a book about war. I’ve decided to go this latter route, and even picked a book with “War” in the title! Rhythm of War is the fourth book in the Stormlight Archives, and as the title implies, a brutal war has been raging for quite some time, almost to the point where the constant violence has become a way of life.
Let’s take a look at the covers:
From left to right:
Tor Books (2020) – Gollancz (2020)
Spanish Edition (2020) – German Edition (2020)
Winner:
I confess, I’m just a tad biased towards Michael Whelan’s art (and just get a load of the full wraparound cover!) but I have to say these are all winners!
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
One cannot beat Whelan!
I just don’t like the Gollancz covers.

I prefer more color as well. The Gollancz covers for Sanderson books are always monochrome with just a splash of color. I get that it’s their hook, but it’s not for me.

I wouldn’t say that it has to be colorful. I can perfectly enjoy abstract black and white art. But Whelan!

I like the Gollancz cover quite a bit: the basic colors and that spear-wielding figure make for a very dramatic image 🙂

I do like the dramatic figure wielding a spear 🙂

I agree, Whelan all the way. I’ve always loved his artwork. I have an art book of his, it’s absolutely fantastic!

I did not know he had an art book. I’ll have to check it out, might need to add it to my collection 🙂

Epic is a great word to describe it! It was the first time I’d seen it, while putting this post together. I was floored by its beauty 🙂

Great pick! There’s something about the Gollancz cover that really stands out to me.

I’ve always preferred the US covers to the Gollancz covers, though I have to admit the black and white is quite dramatic!

Damn, I find it hard, I mean I love the TOR guy, but those at the bottom works so well!

Haha yeah that’s why I said they are all winners 😀

Of course I do love the original US but also something about the UK version really appeals to me with this one.
