Friday Face-Off: Action
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
~ a cover that depicts ACTION
Mogsy’s Pick:
Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski
There were a lot of action covers to choose from this weeks, but I went with a novel of The Witcher because you can always count on Geralt of Rivia to bring the excitement. Here are some of the best covers I could find for this book:
From left to right:
Polish Edition A (1996) – Polish Edition B (2000) – Polish Edition C (2014)
Gollancz (2014) – Orbit – (2014) – Italian Edition (2014)
Portuguese Edition (2015) – Spanish Edition (2016) – Chinese Edition (2016)
French Edition (2010) – Russian Edition (2020) – Finnish Edition (2014)
Winner:
So many great action covers, I can’t choose just one. So here are three of my favorites this week! (I especially love the flock of birds flying in dragon formation on the Russian edition!)
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
I go with your first finalist: it’s full of action, and that’s what the Witcher is about. I nearly can see myself playing that scene. It’s hot as hell and reflects the title.
In the Russian version I liked to see Roach. But I didn’t like Gerald‘s portrait, it seems like done by a noob.

Oh, good point on Roach! I always forget what a big part that horse plays in his life 🙂

Three amazing picks indeed! And infinitely better than the first two Polish covers with the scantily-clad archer lady… 😀 😀

Wow! I hadn’t realised there were so many amazing covers! My favourites are the Orbit Edition (2014), the Spanish Edition (2016), and the Chinese Edition (2016). All beautiful, all action-packed and all completely different from one another!

Yeah it’s hard to believe how long ago the original Polish edition first came out, so many years and so many covers!

So long ago! I read The Last Wish before the games came out and haven’t read any since! Although the games are some of my favourites of all time! I really must continue…

This is a great choice for this week’s subject, Mogsy:). So many fabulous action scenes! I am a bit torn, but I think my favourite is the Portuguese edition – though the Chinese edition is calling to me and the Orbit cover would be a contender if it wasn’t for that horrible textbox running along the bottom of the cover.

Yes, such a shame about that giant text box! Otherwise, that Orbit one would have been the clear winner.

There are some great covers here but the Orbit one clearly stood out for me on first glance.

It’s the “action-y” cover that made me first think of this book for the theme 😀

I’m not sure which one I like best, but this was a great pick this week.

I do love the Orbit cover the best, but I’m also drawn to the Italian cover😁

I have the cover of nr 4 on my shelf, must say looking at the other covers mine now looks a bit boring… Great pick Mogsy

Haha, yeah, the Gollancz covers are actually quite nice, but they’re not as action-y as the others.

I’m torn between two very different versions, the Orbit cover and Polish Edition B (C?) (2014). I love the action and fire of the Orbit one, but I also love the classic feel of the archer ready to shoot from their green hiding spot in the tree in the Polish one.

Oops, yeah that second B should have been C, thanks for catching that! I’ve gone and edited it. And yes, that’s definitely a strong cover this week. I like the “zoomed out” feel of the image, like we are watching the archer stalk her prey 😀

Wow, a lot of these are quite action-y. I kind of love the Spanish edition. 🙂

I like your first, but something with the words. So I will go gollancz
