Friday Face-Off: Tentacles
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“The sea brought you. The sea shall have you back”
~ a cover featuring TENTACLES
Mogsy’s Pick:
Deeplight by Frances Hardinge
I’ve picked a recent read for today’s topic, the delightfully dark and whimsical undersea adventure Deeplight by Frances Hardinge!
From left to right:
Macmillan Children’s Books HC (2019) – Macmillan Children’s Books PB (2020) – Amulet Books (2020)
Winner:
Although the Amulet version is the one I’m most familiar with and it’s also the cover with the brightest colors (and biggest tentacles), I’m going to have to go with one of the moodier UK Macmillan editions. I think my favorite is the paperback, for a couple reasons. First of all, I love jellyfish! And second, I think the stylized typeface really gives it the edge.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
My favorite is the third, because tentacles. Also, I liked the wavy typescript.
The other covers don’t work for color blind people like me, where the blue and green blur.

That’s interesting! I didn’t occur to me how these covers would look like to color blind people.

Covers are overrated anyways 🤣 You just don’t look at them very often: in the shelf there’s the small back which I find highly underrated (I look at them all the time in my library), during reading only when opening the book and only if it’s no ebook.

This was actually hard, they are similar, and yet not, so I will choose the middle one too 🙂

Yeah, the first and second are quite similar.

Tentacles?? Oh boy I am in deep trouble today! And I do prefer the amulet one LOL

Yeah if I didn’t read fantasy or horror, I would have no idea where to look for tentacle covers 😛

I love the first 2 so much, I have been tempted many times to get this book just to put the cover on display.

I heard the original UK cover has won awards! It’s beautiful for sure.

Oh the first two are beauties! They are definitely my favourites… no hard choice at all! 😄

As I told Lynn, who showcased the same book, all three covers deserve a win! 🙂

This is a wonderful choice, Mogsy – not just because the covers are to die for, but because it is a FABULOUS read. And no… don’t make me choose between the first two cover, because I simply can’t… Though the Amulet cover comes a VERY close second!

You really can’t go wrong with any of these. But I think the Macmillan paperback is my favorite too😁

There’s just something about the jellyfish and wavy text 🙂

I’m with you, I prefer that 2nd cover, for the same reasons: the typeface and the tentacles wrapping that seemingly tiny boat.

Ooh, good spot on that boat detail – I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out!

That’s fantastic, lol! I think it’s a YA book, though I think it can work for MG too, like a lot of her other books 🙂

Yep, they’re all very strong this week – especially if you love tentacles, lol!

So funny that we both chose this one. And, although I couldn’t choose between them I love the cover you’ve chosen and was so happy to see a third cover available.
