Friday Face-Off: Sorrow
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“Sorrow”
~ any cover that makes you SAD
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Drowning Girl by Caitlín R. Kiernan
When I saw the topic for this week, my mind immediately went to the Roc cover of The Drowning Girl, whose subject matter and colors have always gives me a deep sense of melancholy. When I looked to see if the novel had any other editions, I was delighted to find more than fit the theme. Let’s take a look at them now:
From left to right:
Roc (2012) – German Edition (2019) – Polish Edition (2014)
Spanish Edition (2014) – Portuguese Edition A (2014) – Portuguese Edition B (2015)
Turkish Edition (2014) – French Edition (2014) – Romanian Edition (2015)
Winner:
Covers like the Portuguese editions just make want to shout at publishers PLEASE STOP PUTTING YOUR FUGLY STICKERS ON YOUR MARKETING IMAGES! I’m not a huge fan of any of the ones for this week in any case, all the images of drowning girls are too disturbing. If I had to choose, I guess my pick would be the German edition because at least in that one the woman looks peaceful.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
I think my favorite might actually be the French edition. It strikes me as very haunting but personal.

Yes, I definitely get the creeps from that one 🙂

Yay! Honestly, there were quite a few striking ones here, but that one stood out to me the most. I love her expression.

Oh I heartily echo your rant – those nasty red blobs just wreck any kind of mood the cover was going for! You’re right about these cover being sad… My favourite is the Roc 2012 edition, which is sad and creepy all at once. A great choice of book – this particular theme this week has thrown up some really interesting selections:))

Ugh, yes, those horrid stickers! I know you always mention them in your posts and ever since I’ve been noticing them more, and I feel your pain! So many great images ruined by a big ugly blob!

Oh absolutely! And when you see covers that aren’t defaced by them, you realise just what a blight they are.

I like your choice: even though it doesn’t look as if the figure is immersed in water, the movement of hair and dress suggest it in a very eerie way…

I agree about the stickers. I like the Roc one as well as the Turkish one. I read this book some time ago on impulse when I saw it at my library. I remember liking it quite a bit and recall it being somewhat haunting.

Yeah, I read this one a long time ago too. I didn’t love it, it was too strange for me, but the atmosphere was enjoyable 🙂

I think I’d pick the Roc edition, but there’s also something interesting about the Spanish edition.

I do like the imagery of the Spanish edition, but man, that one gives me the creeps for some reason 🙂

I will go with Turkish, some other ones were promising, but they never get it all right

I also struggled with this topic – sometimes I could kick myself! But I love your choice and in fact your favourite, it’s the one that really stuck for me when I did my initial scroll down. I’m also attracted to the Turkish edition because of the colours.
