Waiting on Wednesday 05/13/20

Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that first originated at Breaking the Spine but has since linked up with “Can’t Wait Wednesday” at Wishful Endings now that the original creator is unable to host it anymore. Either way, this fun feature is a chance to showcase the upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

Mogsy’s Pick

A Dance With Fate by Juliet Marillier (September 1, 2020 by Ace Books)

To celebrate Wyrd and Wonder, I’ll be featuring fantasy/paranormal-related picks for my Waiting on Wednesday posts for the whole month of May! This week, I’m looking forward to the second book of Juliet Marillier’s Warrior Bards series!

“A young woman who is both a bard–and a warrior–seeks to repay her debts and settle scores in this thrilling historical fantasy series.

The young warrior and bard Liobhan has lost her brother to the Otherworld. Even more determined to gain a place as an elite fighter, she returns to Swan Island to continue her training. But Liobhan is devastated when her comrade Dau is injured and loses his sight in their final display bout. Blamed by Dau’s family for the accident, she agrees to go to Dau’s home as a bond servant for the span of one year.

There, she soon learns that Oakhill is a place of dark secrets. The vicious Crow Folk still threaten both worlds. And Dau, battling the demon of despair, is not an easy man to help.

When Liobhan and Dau start to expose the rot at the center of Oakhill, they place themselves in deadly danger. For their enemy wields great power and will stop at nothing to get his way. It will take all the skills of a Swan Island warrior and a touch of the uncanny to give them a hope of survival….”

  1. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book, but I liked it enough that I’m curious about this. Likely won’t jump on a ARC, but I’ll keep my eye out for reviews.

    • Yeah, I know what you mean – I wasn’t crazy for the first book either, though it wasn’t bad…I’ve just read much better from the author. Still, I want to see if this one will pick up 🙂

  2. That cover is so pretty! I haven’t yet read the first book so I can’t get too excited, but now this series is back on my radar😁

  3. A do want to try a book or series of hers one of these days, and this one does sound interesting. Which of hers that you’ve read would you recomment to someone new to her work?

    • Yay, glad you asked! I LOVE Juliet Marillier. I actually wouldn’t start with this series though, while I enjoyed the first book, I didn’t think it was her strongest. My favorite by her would probably be the Blackthorn and Grim trilogy – very Celtic inspired and deals with Fae. The other one I really love is also the first Sevenwaters book, Daughter of the Forest. It’s sort of like a fairy tale retelling…very deep and emotional and beautiful 😀

      • Awesome, thanks much! Turns out I have an ebook copy of Daughter of the Forest so I copied that to my Kindle to keep it top of mind. And I added the first book of both of those series to my TBR.

  4. I still need to catch up with the Blackthorn and Grimm series so I’ll sit on the fence with this one and await your feelings on the second in this series.
    Lynn 😀
