Friday Face-Off: Freebie
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:

Mogsy’s Pick:
Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence
I loved this book, and it pleased me to find that it had so many great covers. Suffice to say I was glad it was not the last we’d heard of Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire when this Prince of Fools came out, and of course I also really enjoyed the character of Prince Jalan, a self-confessed liar, cheat, and rakish playboy who believes courage is overrated. But for all his foibles, it’s hard to resist his charms. Let’s see if we can say the same for any of the covers this week, as we take a look at them now:
From left to right:
Ace (2014) – Harper Voyager (2014)
Italian Edition (2016) – Czech Edition (2016) – Persian Edition (2018)
Latvian Edition (2015) – Polish Edition (2017) – French Edition (2017)
Winner:
Several stood out for me this week, so it was hard to pick just a single winner. But again and again, one kept pulling my attention to it, and that was the Italian edition. I do tend to like photo-realistic style covers, and there’s something about the character’s pose and expression that drew me to it.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
I love your selection this week because this is one of the few times when I don’t think there’s a bad cover in the bunch! I think I’m with you on the Italian cover. I haven’t always been a big fan of photo-realistic covers, but they’re growing on me, and this one really works.

I’ve always loved photo-realistic, but I know why some people would prefer the more artistic ones 🙂

I do like the first one, but I do like yours too, I just feel it should be, hmm, more in focus?

True, it seems a bit out of focus, but maybe it’s just the quality of the pic!

Oh your choice is by far the prettiest – but I certainly agree there isn’t a dud here:)). I also like the jaunty nature of the Latvian cover…

I agree, pretty the perfect description of it 😀

These are some nice covers. I think I like the Czech the best, tho the Polish one is also great.

Czech’s pretty, that and the UK cover are pretty similar.

I’m reading my first Mark Lawrence book in April for a tour and I’m really excited. I do think I like the Ace version bets of all.

There’s some great range to these covers and I think they all work. But I’m most drawn to the French cover.

I think my comment got devoured by the spam gods. 🙂 Anyway I like that first cover the best I think, mainly for the snowy background and the birds… it just has a certain vibe. 🙂

Good thing this one came through! And I hear ya – I have a soft spot for snowy themed covers too 😀

I think my favorites are the original UK covers for this series, they’re just so striking.

I think your choice is very appropriate character wise! But, I’m drawn to the Polish version.
