Bookshelf Roundup 01/04/20: Stacking the Shelves & Recent Reads
Bookshelf Roundup is a feature I do every weekend which fills the role of several blog memes, like Stacking the Shelves where I talk about the new books I’ve added to my library or received for review, as well as It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? where I summarize what I’ve finished reading in the last week and what I’m planning to read soon. Mostly it also serves as a recap post, so sometimes I’ll throw in stuff like reading challenge progress reports, book lists, and other random bookish thoughts or announcements.
Received for Review
My thanks to the publishers and authors for the following review copies received, and be sure to click the links to their Goodreads pages for more details and full descriptions!
Welcome to the first Bookshelf Roundup of 2020! First thank you to St. Martin’s Press for sending me The God Game by Danny Tobey! I’m really looking forward to reading this book, and I’m thrilled to have a physical ARC, not to mention the cover is so pretty. Thank you also to Tor Books for a surprise ARC of Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha. This is the first book of a series called Mercenary Librarians, which just sounds like the coolest thing ever. And from the awesome team at Tachyon Publications, I also received Of Mice and Minestrone by Joe R. Lansdale, a short collection of tales featuring two of the author’s most popular characters, the East Texas duo Hap and Leonard.
And much love to the folks at Simon Pulse for sending me a finished copy of Chosen by Kiersten White! Super excited about reading this one, if I haven’t already started by the time this post goes up. With thanks also to DAW Books for sending me the following: Ghost Money by Stephen Blackmoore is the fifth book of the Eric Carter series which I’ve been meaning to try, but looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Speaking of sequels, The Mistress of Illusions by Mike Resnick is the second book of The Dreamscape trilogy, another series that I’d meant to start but didn’t get the chance to. Too many books, too little time!
Only one audiobook in the digital haul this week, with thanks to Listening Library for a listening copy of Ashlords by Scott Reintgen. I had mixed feeling about his book Nyxia but this one described as “Red Rising meets The Scorpio Races” sounds like something I would like better. Plus, Lauren Fortgang’s involved as one of the narrators, and I’m a big fan.

This Week’s Reads
Have you heard of or read any of the books featured this week? What caught your eye? Any new discoveries? I hope you found something interesting for a future read! Let me know what you plan on checking out. Until next time, see you next Roundup!
Deal with the Devil has caught my eye on Edelweiss… I think I’ll line it up closer to release.

That wasn’t really on my radar before, but the more I learn about it, the more I’m intrigued!

I’ve read one book by Blackmoore. I don’t remember any specifics, but I haven’t read another book by him since. I don’t it was the series mentioned here, but the MC was Joe Sunday, Zombie PI. I just looked it up and I gave it the trash tag 😀
Glad to see Resnick is still writing. I keep waiting to hear the announcement that he’s died…

Blackmoore has a good sense of humor from what I’ve seen on Twitter and elsewhere on social media. Too bad his series is so far ahead now though, I don’t think I’ll ever catch up…and I doubt I’d like the Zombie PI book 😛

The God Game has been on my radar for a while and I’m determined to try something of Joe Lansdale-maybe the drive in books first.

Hoping to read The God Game soon!

OOh nice! I loooved Chosen! Such a fun read! I’m anxious to know if this was a duology Kiersten wrote or if it will be longer. I feel like duology makes more sense though. Lol.
Hope you enjoy all the new reads!
My StS will be up tomorrow, so stop by then if you can!
Have a GREAT day!

No ARCs for me this week, but a ton of used books to stack the shelves. I just finished The Broken Heavens by Kameron Hurley (review to come) and am deep into Splintegrate
by Deborah Teramis Christian, with Lady Hotspur by Tessa Gratton likely next if I stick to release dates.

Ooh, Splintegrate…I know that book got pushed back quite a few times, I hope it’s meeting expectations!

I’ve been hearing some good things about Ashlords. If it weren’t a January release, I think I would have requested it😁

Yeah, I love the sound of it! Hope to listen to it sometime this month.

The Dragon Republic is on my reading queue, and I can’t wait to see how the story moves forward. Jade City’s sequel – Jade War – is there as well, waiting patiently for its turn… 😉

A book a day, you’ll be done by next week! I’ve read the first couple Eric Carter books and they’re a little rough around the edges… but I hope you like them!

Happy Saturday!

That cover of dragon republic looks like it couldve been a Sanderson book. Same artist??

I don’t know, but I can definitely see the similarities. I know they like to the do the whole monochromatic thing with Sanderson’s covers in the UK 😀

I’m so excited to start Chosen! It’s next or second next in the queue, once I finish my current read. And I enjoyed The Dragon Republic, but I didn’t like it as much as the first one, not even close. Rin was so unlikeable in this one, I wanted to slap her!

Oh yeah, Rin was totally unlikable! That’s normally something that would really bother me but for some reason hasn’t in this series and I don’t know why. I think just because in a way I still empathize because of all she’s been through but also I think the direction the story is headed will make Rin out to be the villain in the end…but we’ll see. 🙂
