Friday Face-Off: Halloween
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“Trick or treat!”
~ a cover inspired by HALLOWEEN
Mogsy’s Pick:
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
This book and I did not get along at all, but as I recall, Halloween plays a big part at the end of the story and that’s good enough for me to use it for this week’s topic. Admittedly, I had a hard time coming up with anything else that was more representative of Halloween, and anyway, there’s nothing like a witchy book to get you in the mood for this holiday.
There are a lot of covers for this novel, here’s a bunch of them:
From left to right:
Viking (2011) – Headline (2011) – Headline eBook (2011)
French Edition (2011) – Portuguese Edition (2011) – Chinese Edition (2011) – Croatian Edition (2011)
Greek Edition (2012) – Norwegian Edition (2011) – German Edition (2011)
Hebrew Edition (2012) – Latvian Edition (2014) – Slovak Edition (2011) – Romanian Edition (2011)
Serbian Edition (2011) – Italian Edition (2011) – Bulgarian Edition (2011)
And normally I would not include the covers for editions that are divided for publications, but these Vietnamese language Alphabooks editions are just too pretty not to show:
1A and 1B
Winner:
You’ve probably guessed already, but I had to do it. I just love this one!
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
Ha, I love both French versions very much 🙂 Sad that I forgot how to speak it ages ago.
I’ve heard about this book series and know lots of people who are excited about it. It never seemed too interesting to me though. Even though I love witches.

I kind of messed up and mislabeled one of the French versions, but yes, they’re both awesome!

Some great choices this week! I think I like the Headline and French editions the best.

Headline edition is a bit plainer, but fantastic!

I’m not a massive fan of the covers but the best for me are the Viking one and the Bulgarian one.

Now that’s a lot of covers! I’m torn between the Headline ebook cover and the Latvian one. I like the contrast of the white against the red in the Headline one and the darkness of the Latvian one. some of these just seem too busy for me.

That was my feeling for a lot of the covers too. I think it was wise of Headline to go more simple and elegant.

I thought of this one too but I didn’t think it had more publications. Wow, I was so wrong.
I like the Croatian Edition (2011 that’s the second row far right) and the Romanian Edition (2011 fourth row far right). I loved this series and between 1A and 1B I agree with 1B

Yeah it has a ton! It was a hugely popular book, so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, but still, wow, it’s a lot!

The Headline ebook wins hands down for me. Not sure why, maybe just for the simplicity?

I agree, there’s something very aesthetically pleasing about the Headline covers. A good example of less is more.

Interesting pick! So many different kinds of covers. I like the one you picked because it has the whole clock thing going for it…think it fits the book well.

I will go with the Portuguese, but they did not really managed to get that title in the right place or format

I guess it could be worse, lol!

So many covers to pick from, but the one that keeps drawing my attention is the Greek one – no particular reason I can understand, but my subconscious is drawn to it… 😀
