Friday Face-Off: Horror
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear”
~ a cover for a HORROR novel
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Troop by Nick Cutter
For today’s topic, I chose…THE TROOP! A scoutmaster and his troop of five scouts being abandoned on a small deserted island to fend for themselves against an unknown infection. This book kept me on pins and needles right up to the end.
Let’s take a look at the covers:
From left to right:
Gallery Hardcover (2014) – Gallery Paperback (2016) – Headline (2014)
Czech Edition (2014) – Turkish Edition (2017) – German Edition (2014)
French Edition Denoël (2016) – French Edition Alto (2016) – Hungarian Edition (2016)
Winner:
There’s something about the idea of being lost in an isolated place that strikes a primal fear in my heart. Knowing that no one can help you, or even hear you scream. That this book takes place in a sleepy little town off the coast of Prince Edward Island–a Canadian province known for its lush landscapes and gorgeous coastlines–is simply the icing on the cake. No contest, I just love the Headline edition for juxtaposing the bucolic setting with the horror of being trapped on and island surrounded by the stuff of nightmares. I love how this cover is both beautiful and frightening.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
Great post! 😀

Okay, I like your cover choice but the German Edition has a better font and is brighter and both covers have a Stephen King Blurb which I think is cool. So, apparently, it is scary as hell.

The German edition not only has the Stephen King blurb, it even kind of looks like a Stephen King cover, so I see where you’re coming from 🙂

I am having a hard time today
I like the fog, but is there fog in the book?
I like the lightning, but is there lightning in the book?
THe French is cool, but there are no trees there
The Hungarian is nice, but the title could look better
So hard! I will go with yours

Ooh I heard this one was a trip! The Gallery edition is probably my favorite- I love the misty look- but then the Headline and Czech covers as well.

The last one in Hungarian was super creepy…. But the one who one gave more Stephen King vibes I guess?

That one and the one above gave good King vibes for sure!

Man, what a great collection of covers – and to think, I own the boring Gallery one. I immediately fell in love with the German cover but the Headline one would be my second pick.

Haha, the Gallery one might be plain, but I actually quite like the starkness of the red-orangey color.

I like the Gallery hardcover for its simplicity but I also love the Hungarian cover. Great choice, this is a book I have a copy of but haven’t read.

Ooh lots of nice cover choices here! I like the Headline, German and Hungarian ones a lot. The title positioning spoils the two European ones though so I go with your pick!

You’re right about the title positioning on some of those…it’s quite distracting.

Ah, yes, your choice is indeed the best: that forked lightning adds such a spectral quality to the image that the other covers lack.
And I was not aware of this title, so I will take a closer look… Thanks for the tip! 😉

It’s a thoroughly creepy book – a mixture of atmosphere and all out gore. I think you’d enjoy it 😉

I like your choice and the Gallery Paperback – and in fact the French version now I look again. I think I detect a theme of my liking the isolate isle appeal.
