Friday Face-Off: Ghost
Welcome to The Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy! Each Friday, we will pit cover against cover while also taking the opportunity to showcase gorgeous artwork and feature some of our favorite book covers. If you want to join the fun, simply choose a book each Friday that fits that week’s predetermined theme, post and compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog.
This week’s theme is:
“There’s more of gravy than of grave about you.”
~ a cover that features a GHOST
Mogsy’s Pick:
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Cas Lowood is a ghost hunter who travels the world in search of urban legends, vanquishing evil spirits that kill and terrorize innocent people. After receiving a tip, he ends up in Thunder Bay where the spirit of a teenage girl has been haunting the locals since her death in 1958. A murder victim, she is called “Anna Dressed in Blood” because her ghost still wears the white dress she had on the day she died, except now it is dripping and stained red with gore. She can be found in the house where she used to live, and every person who has ever stepped foot inside has met a gruesome end by her hand.
If you ask me, when it comes to evil ghosts that need busting, no one deserves it more than Anna. I so looked forward to Cas ending her reign of terror. And therein lies the rub – I wanted Cas to kill Anna, not fall in love with her!
Ah well, I guess that’s a rant for another day. Today, we’re looking at some covers:
From left to right:
Tor Teen (2011) – Thai Edition (2013) – Turkish Edition (2014)
French Edition (2016) – Russian Edition (2017) – Turkish Edition (2014) – Vietnamese Edition (2015)
Winner:
I love the black-red-and-white combo as a color scheme, but unfortunately I dislike the art style of many of these covers, preferring the more photorealistic options. My choice came down to the Thai or Turkish editions, and I ultimately went with the former even though the cover makes the book look a lot scarier than it actually is.
But what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
I agree with your choice. 🙂 I find that cover looks the most…neutral-looking? lol I don’t know how to say it, but I like that it looks flatter compared to the other ones (the rest just scare me haha) 😛

I know what you mean, I do not like the art style for a lot of these covers. Anna looks so…I don’t know…cartoony in them! 😀

Ooh spooky. I think I like the French edition the best. Then the TOR one I guess.

The French edition is really cool, because it’s so different 🙂

I like the Tor teen one the best. I love that use of colour.

Yep, I love the black and white and just a splash of red.

There are actually quite a few here I like but I agree, I think the Thai edition is best. Next to that, I think I also like the Vietnamese one. Great choice for comparison this week.

The Vietnamese edition is pretty nice. It reminds me of a comic book cover though!

I think I still like the original Tor Teen edition best. But the one you chose is definitely the creepiest!

Haha, yes, I think that’s why it appeals to me so much!

I have to go with the Vietnamese cos it is so dark

I agree. After the one I picked, that one ranks second in terms of creep factor.

Good choice, indeed! The lack of a complete figure enhances the feeling of weirdness, danger and fear, much more than a fully manifested ghost… 🙂

Yeah, there’s definitely something creepy about just being able to see her feet!

My favorite is the Tor teen, but if they took the girl from the Tor cover and the red background from the Turkish cover, that would look really cool!

You’re right! I would have loved to see that!

Good pick. One of the issues I have with these covers is the font for the title/author name. I’d have also picked the original cover though. Maybe it’s cause it’s the one I often see. 🤣

I’m with you there…the font is kind of terrible 🙂

Your choice is really creepy – I quite like the Tor Teen one for this but I think that’s probably because it’s the one I’m very familiar with.
