Waiting on Wednesday: 06/27/18
“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that first originated at Breaking the Spine but has since linked up with “Can’t Wait Wednesday” at Wishful Endings now that the original creator is unable to host it anymore. Either way, this fun feature is a chance to showcase the upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!

Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel (September 4th 2018 by Entangled: Teen)
So you might have heard, I have a bit of a weakness for Beauty and the Beast retellings, and yes, despite how wonderfully crazy and bee-zarre this one sounds, I’ve been assured it does indeed contain a B&tB story at its core. Needless to say, I’m still a bit skeptical, but if this book does end up living up to the “Beauty and the beast like you’ve never imagined!” blurb, I’m sure it would be one hell of a unique and imaginative retelling. Also, it takes place in the same world as Meg Kassel’s Black Bird of the Gallows which I haven’t read, but the good news, each book in the series can be read as a standalone.
KEEPER OF THE BEES is a tale of two teens who are both beautiful and beastly, and whose pasts are entangled in surprising and heartbreaking ways.
Dresden is cursed. His chest houses a hive of bees that he can’t stop from stinging people with psychosis-inducing venom. His face is a shifting montage of all the people who have died because of those stings. And he has been this way for centuries—since he was eighteen and magic flowed through his homeland, corrupting its people.
He follows harbingers of death, so at least his curse only affects those about to die anyway. But when he arrives in a Midwest town marked for death, he encounters Essie, a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from debilitating delusions and hallucinations. His bees want to sting her on sight. But Essie doesn’t see a monster when she looks at Dresden.
Essie is fascinated and delighted by his changing features. Risking his own life, he holds back his bees and spares her. What starts out as a simple act of mercy ends up unraveling Dresden’s solitary life and Essie’s tormented one. Their impossible romance might even be powerful enough to unravel a centuries-old curse.
Ooh nice! I still need to read the first book!! I feel like I am always behind on my books! Lol!

Beauty and the Beast is one of my fave fairy tales – it and Red Riding Hood (love the wolf, go figure). I’m anxious for this one too but I have read Black Bird of the Gallows and loved it. It was so unique. Hope this one is just as good.

I’ve seen this cover but never read the synopsis. I had no idea it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast! I’m not a huge fan of retellings, but lately they’ve been pretty excellent. Marissa Meyer’s Cinder and the rest of The Lunar Chronicles has been really enjoyable. I only have Winter left to read! Geekerella was pretty good, too!

You’re right, it really doesn’t sound like a retelling of beauty and the beast from the publisher description! I only found out from a pitch I got from the publicist. But I agree, if the author can pull it off, this could be a really unique retelling.

I hope so! It has the potential to be amazing.

This looks awesome I hope you like it! I wouldn’t have even bothered to read the synopsis based on the cover, but I read it because you said it is like Beauty and the Beast and it actually sounds really good. I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover. 🤦 😂

I actually really like the cover, but yes, if I would never have guessed beauty and the beast from a BEE, lol!

Oh wow, from that synopsis, I would never have guessed it was a Beauty and Beast retelling? It’s definitely something different! And points for “bee-zare”! 😀

Oh wow bees! That’s freaky. Almost reminds me of Ladyhawke, with the whole curse thing. With differences obviously. 🙂 Sounds good!

Haha, you get points for mentioning Ladyhawke. Classic 🙂

Whaaaaaaaaat the heck…this book sounds so incredibly trippy! I enjoy Beauty and the Beast retellings myself, but I absolutely agree that this will be a total original if the author pulls it off!

Yeah, whenever I pick up retellings, one of the things I look for is originality. I think this will have it in spades! Let’s hope it works out 🙂

Wow. That… sounds… I don’t know. It sounds really interesting, but there’s a lot to take in with just the blurb alone! And I love the watercolor style of the cover art.

Me too, it’s so well painted! I love how the watercolor effects create the sense of “fuzz” on the bee. It’s a really good piece of art.
