The Waking Fire: The Draconis Memoria by Anthony Ryan (July 5, 2016 by Ace)
Anthony Ryan returns with the first book of a brand new saga following his hit epic fantasy Raven’s Shadow trilogy. Even though Blood Song remains my favorite book of that series, I’m interested to see what he has in store for readers next. Plus, who can say no to dragons?
“Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from the veins of captive or hunted Reds, Green, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that give fearsome powers to the rare men and women who have the ability harness them—known as the blood-blessed.
But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly. The Syndicate’s last hope resides in whispers of the existence of another breed of drake, far more powerful than the rest, and the few who have been chosen by fate to seek it.
Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered blood-blessed, who finds himself pressed into service by the protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted territories in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin, facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an ironship, whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.
As lives and empires clash and intertwine, as the unknown and the known collide, all three must fight to turn the tide of a coming war, or drown in its wake.”
I’m really looking forward to this book to, that cover is very different to the UK one! I have to agree with you about Blood Song being the best in his last series.

Yeah, Blood Song was great! The rest of the series wasn’t bad either, but neither of the later two books could beat the first.

Yeah, I got less and less excited about the story with books 2 and 3. I’m looking forward to a new start though.

Oooh, I’m intrigued. I should pass this onto my sister, too; she loves all things draconic. (Although hasn’t yet read Marie Brennan, argh!)

What! Every reader who loves all things draconic should get themselves to a bookstore now and pick up the Lady Trent books! 😀

Great pick – I just requested an ARC of that yesterday. It’s about time I jumped on the A.R. bandwagon. 🙂

I just realized Lynn picked this too for her WoW but she showed the UK cover. Now I know why this sounds so familiar! I need to read Anthony Ryan, I feel like I’m missing out:-)

Yep, the UK cover came first, and then some weeks ago the US cover was revealed. I chose this one because it’s likely the one I’ll read stateside 🙂

Dragons! Dragons! How could I resist dragons? 😉
Interesting novel, and fascinating premise. Thank you!

Haha – too cool! We both went the same way but with alternative covers! I love both the covers to be honest and I’m looking forward to reading this to see how it stacks up – that sounds kind of awful and I don’t mean it in a bad way! It does sound really good. I saw it on NG but only US and Canada – sad am I!
Lynn 😀

Yes, I saw that on NG too! Not sure yet if I want to request the ARC or just wait, since I have more than enough on my plate for the summer at the moment, lol! I think Orbit UK is pubbing it over there, right? Hope they will put it up on NG too 🙂

I like the other cover for this one A LOT, but there is something about this one I enjoy too. I think it’s because it looks the map (cover) is actually burning from fire on the edges.

I like both covers, but the US one has the edge imo. I know what you mean by the map look, I think it gives the cover so much more character than just “here, have a dragon”!

I came very close to running this as my WoW today! 🙂 Definitely looking forward to it!

I sure hope there will be some! Even a some small bit of romance always makes a story better 🙂

The cover is gorgeous which is never a bad thing hehe. I’ve heard mixed things about his last trilogy but since this one has dragons I probably need to read it 😛
