Mogsy’s Pick:
Willful Child: Wrath of Betty by Steven Erikson: October 18, 2016 (Tor Books)
If you’re looking for a good Star Trek spoof — and a decidedly un-PC one at that — then Steven Erikson has got you covered. Wrath of Betty is the second book chronicling the voyages of the A.S.F. starship Willful Child. Its ongoing mission: to make you laugh, and maybe offend some delicate sensibilities along the way. I gotta say though, “BETTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
“From New York Times bestselling author Steven Erikson comes a new SF novel of devil-may-care, near calamitous, and downright chaotic adventures through the infinite vastness of interstellar space…
The continuing adventures of the starship A.S.F. Willful Child. Its ongoing mission: to seek out strange new worlds on which to plant the Terran flag, to subjugate and if necessary obliterate new life-forms, to boldly blow the…
And so we join the not-terribly-bright but exceedingly cock-sure Captain Hadrian Sawback and his motley crew on board the Starship Willful Child for a series of devil-may-care, near-calamitous and downright chaotic adventures through ‘the infinite vastness of interstellar space.’
The New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen series has taken his lifelong passion for Star Trek and transformed it into a smart, inventive, and hugely entertaining spoof on the whole mankindexploring-space-for-the-good-of-all-species-but-trashing-stuff-with-a-lot-ofhigh-tech-gadgets-along-the-way, overblown adventure. The result is an SF novel that deftly parodies the genre while also paying fond homage to it.”
ah not sure it’s a book for me there…

The first one in this series is on my library request list, must see if I can bump it up the list as the synopsis for book 2 makes me want to read it now 🙂

Full disclosure: I’ve never seen the original Star Trek series BUT it’s on my watch list. I don’t know why I never got into it growing up, I’ve always loved sci fi, which is what’s prompting me to finally fix that gap in my sci-fi knowledge. I never even knew about this series but I LOVE the sound of it. If it’s as funny as it sounds I’m in! Hope you love this one as much as the first one Mogsy^^

Ah, everyone should check out the original series at least once. So much from it is ingrained in our geek culture now 🙂

I remember when you reviewed the first book, and thinking I need to check out this series. And I’m still interested! I’m more of a STtNG fan, but I do love the utter cheesiness of the original. Sounds like fun!

Unpopular opinion time! I’m actually not a big fan of TNG! I mean, it’s not bad, but I personally like Voyager more, and even Enterprise (which probably makes me even more the odd one out, lol!)

I do like Star Trek. Such a funny title, too!
Of course, I think I have a book or two by Erickson. I’ll have to see what they are–and perhaps read one of them and look for the first book in this series.

Wow, he’s found time for a second spoof, has he? I enjoyed the first one, but I prefer his Malazan fantasies.

Yeah, apparently he’s continuing the Willfull Child series. I’m not complaining though, the first one was hilarious! I enjoy his satirical humor more than his dark fantasy 🙂

Never read the first one, but when I saw this title, I like, Hey! That’s the Star Trek inspired books! 🙂

Having fun with well-established icons, as the author must do in these books, usually translates into fun for the readers. I need to start on this series, and keep it on hand for moments when I need some lightness in my life…

Agree with Maddalena’s comment. Sounds like the author is enjoying this series so it usually makes for good reading. A haven’t read any Star Trek or Star Wars which always makes me feel sort of guilty – I keep saying one day though! Never say never.

I would not have guessed Erikson would also write Star Trek books. And spoof ones at that. 🙂 (I am obviously far from an expert, or I would already know this) Learn something new everyday

I hear Erikson is a big Star Trek fan! I wouldn’t have expected him to write something like this either, but he clearly he was inspired by his life long love for the series.

I am in the middle of the Malazan Book of the Fallen books and I am slowly making my way through the orginal Star Trek and I am enjoying them both so I am really intrigued by this series! 😀
