Waiting on Wednesday 02/03/16
“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that lets us feature upcoming releases that we can’t wait to get our hands on!
Mogsy’s Pick:
The Wheel of Osheim by Mark Lawrence: June 7, 2016 (Ace)
Another brilliant epic fantasy trilogy will come to an end later this year. Seriously, where oh where does the time go? Clearly, 2016 is the year of the Highly-Anticipated-Book-3s. I cannot wait for this sure to be thrilling conclusion of the The Red Queen’s War.
“From the international bestselling author of the Broken Empire Trilogy, the thrilling conclusion to the Red Queen’s War…
Mark Lawrence’s “epic fantasy” (The Washington Post) continues as a reluctant prince returns from the bowels of Hell to engage in his greatest battle yet—among the living and the dead.
All the horrors of Hell stand between Snorri Ver Snagason and the rescue of his family, if indeed the dead can be rescued. For Jalan Kendeth, getting back out alive and with Loki’s key is all that matters. Loki’s creation can open any lock, any door, and it may also be the key to Jalan’s fortune back in the living world.
Jalan plans to return to the three w’s that have been the core of his idle and debauched life: wine, women, and wagering. Fate however has other plans, larger plans. The Wheel of Osheim is turning ever faster, and it will crack the world unless it’s stopped. When the end of all things looms, and there’s nowhere to run, even the worst coward must find new answers. Jalan and Snorri face many dangers, from the corpse hordes of the Dead King to the many mirrors of the Lady Blue, but in the end, fast or slow, the Wheel of Osheim always pulls you back. In the end it’s win or die.”
I tried that other series but..let’s face it, I can’t do dark

His other trilogy is super dark…this one is a bit lighter, because the character isn’t such a psychopath 🙂

LOL. So I could actually perhaps read this one then

Hmm why not!

I really have to read something by Lauwrence. I like grimdark fantasy so I don’t know why I still haven’t read a book by him. I don’t know if I should start with his first or second trilogy though.

Yes, if you like grimdark you really should check out Mark Lawrence! I enjoy both series, but I find I’m actually liking this trilogy a little more so far 🙂

I may have to try this epic series. Nice pick!

Mark Lawrence is yet another author whose work I’ve been meaning to check out. Which would you recommend a newbie start with: this trilogy, or his first series? (Or are they connected in some way?)

You can start with either, they take place in the same world almost simultaneously. Story is branching in a completely different direction so far, so they can be enjoyed entirely separately. The Broken Empire is super dark, with a hateful little psychopath as its protagonist. Personally I prefer Jalan, the cowardly prince of this series 😀

Gotcha. And when you say “super dark,” do you mean on the level of A Song Of Ice And Fire? Or even darker than that?

I wouldn’t say it’s as soul-destroying as ASoIaF, but it’s up there in terms of violence and brutal themes and generally characters doing terrible things to one another. I think the biggest point of contention is the main protagonist, who is really an awful person. You’ll either love him or hate him. 🙂

Hmmmmm. Well, I won’t know if I hate him or love him until I read the first book, right? 😉
Thanks for answering my questions, btw!

I wish I could take an entire year to read all the non review books I can’t get to. Oh well, I guess I could!

I have yet to read anything by this author but the first book in this series in on my tbr shelf already! There really are a lot of series coming to an end this year, aren’t there? It’s very bittersweet. I hope the conclusion here delivers for you and then some Mogsy^^

Yes there are! But there are always new series springing up to take their place, so I guess there is that 😀

June!? That is so close! But that is still plenty of time for me to read the first two books. I binge read The Broken Empire last year, and I think binging this series may happen as well 🙂

I think you can! The books in this series are a bit longer but like you said, you have until June 🙂
